I'm alive, but my PC that's about a thousand kilometers away from me has apparently died. Doesn't feel good leaving it in a state like that until I get home, but there's nobody who can check on it x.XTheEternalPessimist wrote:

I should've given a key to thepilot..... Agh.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Maybe your room has caught fire! Tragedy
Anyway, 77% on this SMP client (sry been doing lots of transcoding). ETA 24h 1920 points though!

I'm now on Vista, and therefore my PPD went from 5000 something to 7000 something because I can use both CPU cores now
This just in : Vista helps cure cancer! Microsoft sales sky rocket.Sydney wrote:

Team BF2s is slowing down on work units. We need more cores, could we possibly convince Chuy or a mod to but up a banner message?

Listen up!
The current clients will expire on Saturday and stop working. There is already a new CPU client out. To run the SMP client, add -smp as a flag.
To run the client as a service and in SMP mode follow these instructions

I still haven't heard back from chuy regarding an announcement on the top of the page. If someone sees him online, contact him please

On a personal note, I'll be going to wacken today. I'll be back on the 5th or 6th. I will leave my PCs on, but unless the new GPU client is released in the next hours I won't be able to upgrade the client until I get back

Hey, I just wanted to let you all know that I just now tried running it as a service and it does work following most of Bruce's advice (I didn't add the -deino flag b/c I don't know what it does, I'm too tired to look it up at the moment, and it works without it.)
In addition to the normal service setup procedure (running the command-line client and specifying that it should be installed as a service,) you need to do the following to make it work. Most of you probably know the details of how to do these, but I included everything for those less experienced with Windows. Of course, before following any of the below instructions, make sure that FAH is NOT running from the folder in question, either as a service or from the console. Check that the FAH process is not running before continuing, as when the cores fail under an incomplete service install, the main FAH process does not exit until you stop the service (which can be done by selecting the service in the below-mentioned MMC snap-in and clicking "stop" or by running "sc stop service-name-here".)
1. Set the service to run as the user you specified in the install. This should obviously NOT be the LOCAL SYSTEM account.
1. a.) Open the SCM MMC snap-in (by running services.msc [requires admin privs, obviously])
1. b.) Right-click the "Folding@home-CPU-[1]" (or similarly named) service and click "Properties" on the context menu.
1. c.) Select the "Log On" tab.
1. d.) Select "This account:".
1. e.) Enter the username and password with which FAH should run. Prefix local account names with ".\" and domain accounts with "domain-name\", where "domain-name" is the name of your domain. Of course, do not include the quotation marks in either format. (If you don't know whether you have a local or domain account and it's your personal computer, it's probably a local account.)
1. f.) Click "OK" to close the properties window. You may or may not see a pop-up informing you that the user has been granted the "Log on as a Service" right. This is normal.
2. Set the -smp flag in the starting parameters for the service
2. a.) Open regedit (such as by typing "regedit" in the run box) This also requires admin privs on the box in question.
2. b.) In the left pane of regedit (the tree,) navigate to:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Folding@home-CPU-[1]
2. c.) With Folding@home-CPU-[1] selected in the left pane, right-click "ImagePath" in the right pane and select "Modify"
2. d.) In the "Value data" box, add " -smp" to the end of what is already in there. Leave everything that is already there.
3. Run the service
3. a.) In the above-mentioned SCM MMC snap-in (services.msc,) select the "Folding@home-CPU-[1]" service.
3. b.) Click the "Start" link just to the left of the list of services or right-click the "Folding@home-CPU-[1]" services and select Start.
Within a couple of minutes, F@H should be running successfully on as many cores as you have allowed it to run.

SMP is buggy. If you don't do a proper shut down of the client prior to shutting down your PC, at least for me, it screws up. Had to restart on another core :-(
HMM I see that I dont got any points in the last 24hours so my comp or internet craped out, srry guys I cant do anythhing about in from Venice.
We have broken into the top 2000 teams and passed 500,000!
Does the new CPU client need the affinity changer?
EDIT:
So I uninstalled both the CPU client and the GPU client and installed the newest versions. Neither of the new versions work, they both crash. Guess that's what I get for trying to fix what isn't broken. I'm sure I'll figure it out though.

I missed a deadline due to some transcoding a while back and then had yet more issues with the SMP client. I'm on the 5.92 beta now and everything seems stable again - will have an extra 1920 points by the end of the day
