I'm going into my senior year next year for high school and i'm thinking I wanna go to college to do something with visual effects or motion graphics or something of that sort and I'm wondering what other programs people could recommend to maybe *get an early start* on things or to see if its even a path I wanna follow. . .

As of now i've been playing around in MAYA (complicated as fuck) and i'm very proficient in photoshop and flash

Buy a good tutorial book.
Looking for good Maya tutorials online will get you nowhere.

Many people have different opinions on which programs to use, but in the end, it all comes down to 3DS Max and Maya. Neither is better than the other though. It's like Mac VS PC. Go for what you're used to.
So since you've been dappling in Maya, I'd stick with it.

Also, check to see if your local colleges/unis offer summer/part-time courses for 3D animation/modeling. That's a great way to learn without committing yourself entirely to it.

I've been wanting to make a Maya tutorial for awhile, but never really gotten around to it..

My 3d models, to somewhat prove I'm not talking out my ass:

also check out  http://www.highend3d.com there are tons of useful scripts and plugins,
and a very nice forum for MAYA.
but  to master tht package u need some time (years) i guess XD.
if u have any question feel free to ask..

I just want to tel you that there is not much demand for 3d modelers/animators but there is a lot fuckers out there in college trying to be in that field. Not to give up on your hopes but in reality it's going to be easier finding Oprah as a poor whore than finding a well paying job for that skill. Good luck.

that's hilarious... there is a huge demand for 3d modelling experts... medical animations/movie making/simulations/video game design...
just wondering... did you try 3d modelling and get discouraged that it's difficult or takes time? I agree there are a lot of people that think it's easy and give up...

and to the OP... Maya is really great and used by most movie studios... I have Max and it's incredible... i use it for the BF2 mods i have been a part of...BF Pirates...BF Apocalypse...N.A.W... and i'm using it now for an indy game i am helping to make...  they all take awhile to learn but if you enjoy it it's no big deal and won't feel like effort...  good luck... I have done some modeling but No I never tried 3d modeling as a career, never wanted to, besides I'm no quitter thats fo sure. .But I do have a lot of friends who did, and I do live in the capital Mecca of 3d modeling. (Los Angeles)... I also have a friend who is a recruiter for a Design School. And he has told me a lot of sad stories of 3d modelers and their stry to find a good job with a BA degree. Nothing to base the facts on, but I know some of that.

And let's be honest, nobody REALLY wants to be a "medical 3d modeler". lol  There is a thirst out there for Game 3d Design, CGI and all that fancy crap but the best of the best get them. Leaving behind the hundreds of mediocre modelers.

.
.Just my two cents...

Do you know how many 3d modelers are out there working for movie/game studios making a good/decent amount of money?

A shitload.

Also, I live in the Canadian "mecca of 3d modeling".

thats cool... there aren't guarantees with any job i guess... what makes me laugh is the schools that are popping up that teach game design...
Pretty much every game company i know of want's real world modding experience... and 3d work is monotanous at times... uvw unwrapping for one...lol... I have been doing 3d for a couple of years... and i figure in about 8 years i should have a pretty good handle on it..

and on medical animations... the animator from Forgotten hope does them and he makes really good money... he's very talented...

and i didn't mean to imply you were a quitter... i just see a lot of people try for a month or 2 and give up...
