Do you even know the system you speak of?  The DS has built in wifi that same as the PSP. The "Wireless reciever" you speak of is for those not possesing wifi in their homes, plugs into a USB port and allows online access.  My DS works fine by itself connecting to my wifi, and Ive never had an issue online.

Seems to me more that you hate the DS, and use the same arugment used against Nintendo since the gamecube.  The "it has not mature gaes" argument, which to me doesnt matter.  I love animal Crossing.  Is it a simple game?  Sure.  Is it for mature audiences?  Not really.  Sometimes its jsut fun to walk around and do simple stuff for a few hours.  I can say for a fact DS has a huge market to appeal towards, myself and both my younger sisters own a DS.  Nearly everyone of my friends have a DS.  Only a couple of my friends have a PSP, and most waited for the price drop, as for when the PSP launched, you could buy a console for its price.  Most of the gmes on the system are mediocre r jsut plain bad, although it does have its good titles.

Then theres the movies for PSP.  The ones several companies gave up on after terrible sales.  For the price of a PSP, I could buy a portable DVD player and a DS and had money left for some movies.

I believe the reason the PSP is so far behind was due to huge cost upfront compared to competitor, lack of killer titles early during launch, and cost of the games themselves, more so then DS games.  This is paralled to the PS3 on its launch, Higher cost, lack of killer titles = slow sales.  However, PS3 is really trying to make up for it, the PSP never really did.   Out of the several people I know with a PSP 99% have one for the homebrew stuff.

I think the DS has literally started to reach its saturation point in Japan, when the PSP price drops expect a massive boom there, even bigger than the one currently, averaging out 40k units a week.
But what are the installed user base figures for the two consoles?

But you're probably right about the DS reaching saturation point - it has to eventually, then we'll see (as we appear to seeing now) the month-by-month sales figures for the PSP pulling ahead.
DS & DSL have 22 million and PSP has 9 million.

PSP is far from dead. It's just that the DS has more appeal to the casual/new gamer, as well as kids (who are probably the majority of portable gamers), and like everyone else said: Japan.

I recently got a PSP myself and I'm loving it. The games are great, graphics are awesome, wifi works wonderfully, and most importantly, I seem to be spending more time on it listening to music or watching movies than gaming (doesn't mean I don't like any of the games). I commute twice a week, with about 4, maybe 5, hours of downtime each day (that's including to and from) and I use this as my mp3 player.

I think the PSP might be a little daunting for some people, while the DS is a simple little gaming device with the kinds of portable games you're used to. And that dual screen with the touchy thingy is a neat gimmick for some people.

If Sony puts more effort towards the kinds of games being put on the PSP, it could easily beat out the DS. Just have to get everyone to come around.

OP, that's full of crap. I have God of War and the two GTA's on PSP. I have none of what you mentioned on the DS. The DS has Super Mario 64, Phantom Hourglass, Advance Wars and the upcoming Metal Slug. You're just mentioning shit that's usually what's featured in ads.

The DS has a longer battery life and a brighter screen(s). Oddly, the speakers even sound more clear. Plus it's backwards-compatible with GBA titles. Since the PSP is disc-based, it suffers from long load times which are simply unnoticeable on cartridge format. Also, you don't have to buy a bloody memory stick for the DS like you do with the PSP.

That being said, the PSP isn't 'finished.'

Nintendo is known for gimmicky bits of hardware, but they struck gold with the touchscreen. Games that know how to use it (Zelda: PH) make it extraordinarily easy to play. Those that don't are the ones that cast it in the gimmick spotlight.

Why oh why did it beat the PSP?, i love the PSP and wish more games came out for it.

Its the more powerful system of the 2, has built in wifi for easy internet access and also good online play. Can play very good quality dvds and has a stack of brilliant games...to name a few,

God of War
Gta: Liberty city
Gta: Vice city
Medal of Honor heroes 1 and 2
Ratchet & clank
Secret Agent Clank
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

And then the DS, it has a touch screen capability with dual screens (2 screens not needed IMO) you have to buy a wireless reciever for online, which i can only be shit and a built in mic.
With games such as:

Nintendogs
Animal crossing
Brain training
More brain training
Mario party
Mario cart
Dogz

All the games for the DS are absolute dog shite and yet its won, which in turn has killed a far better more superious console, the PSP!
Why would anyone want to play brain training, if i wanted to play a game i dont want to be thinking, i want to be enjoying myself in the spare time!

Yes the console is aimed at the more casual market but come on, its killing an absolute masterpiece in handheld technology..the PSP.

Its same with the Wii, winning against the much superiour 360 and PS3.

The casual market is killing the proper gaming platforms off, its about time it went back to the old days!!!!
Its cheaper, Moms and Dads will buy for their younger kids, and girls probably prefer the ds to the psp

Beats me, I how ever think they should have came out with a mini stand/tripod for the psp. With the new movie add on to it, no body will want to hold it for 2+hrs lol. How can I tell Sony about this idea ?

Well IMO the DS is better because it

a) Has Phoenix Wright and
b) Has Advance Wars and
c) Has the R4

btw I only use the R4 to play Sonic these days. And not DS Sonic. The decent Sonics.

I have them both and they are both amazing. But people prefer nintendo over sony pretty much because they're games are well known, fun and everyone is able to play them. Unlike PSP games where their main titles are GTA and stuffz like that!

DS & DSL have 22 million and PSP has 9 million.
And so your argument is moot. It matters not one jot to anyone but Sony how well the PSP is selling now. They've still got to more than double the number of actual consoles in actual peoples hands before they can start to claim that they're even equalling the success of the DS in Japan.

And I'm sure Nintendo have something up their collective sleeves - the DS-wobble-board, or a candy-coated-DS, or some such gimmick, and the Otaku will just lap it up.

Yes they do have to double their sales but seeing as 1/5 of everyone in Japan already owns a DS I don't see them increasing the rate of sales only slowly petering off, while the PSP continues to increase its monthly sales month after month.

But, my point is, all Nintendo have to do is release yet another candy-coated version of the DS and a huge proportion of those 22million current DS/DSL owners (the Otaku) will all go out and buy them up - the Otaku love Nintendo, end of story.

I still don't understand why people don't want PSPs instead of DSs. You can easily put on custom firmware and play nearly any PSP, GBA, DS, or PS1 game on there! (Though I haven't done CFW yet, but I will soon). Plus it's a great media player. Last night I threw Dumb & Dumber on my PSP and tried it out and it had amazing quality and only took up ~350 MB; heh, and then I got so carried away I wound up watching the whole thing while laying in bed.

Yeah, they're just waaaaaay too uptight about "illegal" features. They see CFW as a thorn in their side, when really it could be advertised and push a lot of units out. And for the movies, there are free programs you can use to put your DVDs on your computer, then convert that to a PSP movie. But of course, they only want you to buy the shitty ones on UMDs.

It's an amazing piece of hardware that's pretty awesome and go do practically anything... the casual gamers and laypeople just don't know about it

37 million isn't exactly fail. The reason the DS sold more is because it's cheaper and geared towards more people. The PSP and DS is like the PS3 and the Wii. According to your logic, the PS3 is a failure also. Not quite.

Yes, the PSP didn't fail. It sold allot of units and has enough good games. The NDS just beat it out this time. And allot of the had to do with the fact that the DS came out in December and the PSP in March. The former being the best time to release a new product and the latter being one of the worst.
