As we all know, the Sony PSP is pretty much dead.

PSP sales stand at 37 million
DS sales at 70 million

Why oh why did it beat the PSP?, i love the PSP and wish more games came out for it.

Its the more powerful system of the 2, has built in wifi for easy internet access and also good online play. Can play very good quality dvds and has a stack of brilliant games...to name a few,

God of War
Gta: Liberty city
Gta: Vice city
Medal of Honor heroes 1 and 2
Ratchet & clank
Secret Agent Clank
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

And then the DS, it has a touch screen capability with dual screens (2 screens not needed IMO) you have to buy a wireless reciever for online, which i can only be shit and a built in mic.
With games such as:

Nintendogs
Animal crossing
Brain training
More brain training
Mario party
Mario cart
Dogz

All the games for the DS are absolute dog shite and yet its won, which in turn has killed a far better more superious console, the PSP!
Why would anyone want to play brain training, if i wanted to play a game i dont want to be thinking, i want to be enjoying myself in the spare time!

Yes the console is aimed at the more casual market but come on, its killing an absolute masterpiece in handheld technology..the PSP.

Its same with the Wii, winning against the much superiour 360 and PS3.

The casual market is killing the proper gaming platforms off, its about time it went back to the old days!!!!

Wait wat? how is the PSP dead? I think your classification of dead is a tad off, if the PSP is dead then so are the xbox360 and PS3 seeing as more PSP's are sold each month than those consoles.

The DS and Wii sell so much because they are so cheap and have these casual games that no real gamer would ever play, they are totally different demographics. The DS and Wii don't have much effect on the core market.

The amount of profit sony has made of the PSP and the amount of new games coming for the PSP are massive.

It is fun, cheap and something very different. And you can buy a certain thing for it which is the price of one game which lets you download all your games for free

The same reason that the Wii is beating the PS3 and almost the 360.

Blame Japan.

Plus, the Wii appeals to all ages. Kids, adults...it's hands on fun. That's what people like.

So much for me keeping it a secret.

Also the main point is most of the games on the PSP are on the PS2. And only die hard fans will want to play them on the PSP. I think the PSP does not really have enough exclusives for most people to buy it. And the DVDs for the PSP are not worth it. You can only watch it on the PSP. And they are the same price as its respective DVD.

the console market is going the way of the casual gamer, the PC market is becoming more intensive.

there will not be much of a market for powerful consoles, since a computer can do all the same things, and much more, for a similar price.

I can see a console-less world within the next decade, as high powered PC's become the standard gaming platform.

Well PSP didn't have any good games at the beginning. GTA LCS came out 7 months after the thing was released. Compared to the DS which had Mario 64 out from the start and WarioWare out only a few months after. Also the DS cost $150 at launch and the PSP $300.

Also many of the PSP's games are near identical to those of the PS2, but with worse graphics and controls. Why would you buy a game for the PSP when you have an almost identical game on the PS2, and the PS2 has a larger screen and proper analog stick.

The DS games however were much more innovative, the touch screen control allowed for things that were previously undoable.

Also Nintendo was smart enough to release a much improved version of the DS, the DS lite. The DSL was enough of an improvement over the former DS, being much thinner, lighter, having better buttons sizes and placement and clearer screens. This more than doubled the sales of the DS. The improved PSP however was identical to the old one in every way save being slightly thinner, meaning it hardly boosted sales at all.

So the DS won because:

-Better games at launch

-More innovative games

-Superior improved version.

I don't get how you work out which has "won" seeing as neither is nearing the end of it's product life cycle.

Its obvious to see who will win considering how the PSP has half the sales the DS has and the DS is going strong while I haven't heard anything from Sony for a while. Did they even announce anything for it from E3? (Its actually a question, but If no then its proving my point.)

Yes about 5 exclusive games I think. Let me finalise this arguement you guys are trying to have.

If the PSP is dead then so are the PS3 and xbox 360.

You guys might actually want to have a look at the sales data from this generation and from previous generations before you make uniformed opinions. PSP may even sell less units by the end of its life cycle yet it may still make more profit than the DS seeing as the DS profit margin is lower than that of the PSP, the PSP also helps to boost PS3 sales and vice versa thanks to the compatibility.

You also have to consider market saturation which the DS may hit soon, with sales dropping off massively as the demographic interested already all has one.

And then there's the fact that they aren't direct competitors as they both appeal to different demographics.

So much to the PSP being dead.

I personally never said the PSP is dead, I just said how the DS was a better Portable console because it sold more units. I believe a better console is one that sells more units than one that makes more money.

Yes, but the core audience for the PSP is the US and Europe. The core audience for the DS is Japan. Likewise with the Wii. The Japanese love Nintendo 'cos Nintendo make games that appeal to the Japanese. Therefore anyone making a game for a Japanese audience makes it for the Wii or DS.

It's a self-fulling prophecy.

How so? As in because they buy so many? Which is odd seeing as PSP have sold more than DS every week for like the last half year in Japan.

I think the DS has literally started to reach its saturation point in Japan, when the PSP price drops expect a massive boom there, even bigger than the one currently, averaging out 40k units a week.

But what are the installed user base figures for the two consoles?

But you're probably right about the DS reaching saturation point - it has to eventually, then we'll see (as we appear to seeing now) the month-by-month sales figures for the PSP pulling ahead.
