Scouring the list of scheduled games for E3 is yielding some interesting titles that should be making an appearance. Right now, there are listings for Kid Icarus Wii, Doom 4, Alan Wake, and Half-Life Episode 3. So let’s see, that’s one game that Nintendo fans have been wanting for years, one game that may or may not push some graphical boundaries while scaring the crap out of people, one game that’s been in development since the last generation of consoles, and one game that should finally finish up a trilogy. We knew there were already going to be some great titles showing up, like Little Big Planet and Gears of War 2, but these ones definitely bump the excitement up a notch. I hope that Half-Life listing indicates they’re releasing that one sooner, rather than later. E3 is already looking to be a pretty exciting time for gamers everywhere.

Valve have said that the Ep3 listing isn't true. The other stuff sounds good though. Can't wait for Alan Wake.

Gimme Doom 4 with a decent story line, that actually follows the first 2 of the series with hell on Earth and I'll be happy.

Kid Icarus Wii
- Definately a title I'll pick up next year along with a system.
Alan Wake
- Might wait for a review on that one. The graphics look sweet, but if the adventure's no good, it'll collect dust.
HLE3
- Let me beat HL2, E1 and E2 and I'll get back to you on that one.

Agreed.

To recap the main stuff for other people:

Doom 1 (Episodes 1-3): Player fights from demon-infested (wrought by teleportation experiments by UAC) Mars moon Phobos, to semi "in-hell" moon Deimos, to the surface of Hell.
Ultimate Doom (E1-3+4): Between Doom and Doom 2.
Doom 2: Player gets spat out by a disgruntled hell to find that Earth is infested with demons.
Final Doom: Two user-made 'sequels' to Doom 2 (the first taking place on Jupiter moon Io) placed in an official retail package.
Doom 3: A remake of Doom 1. This time, the moons are left out and you're left sucking sand and pitch, jaggy-edged black shadows with guns that have no lights. Criticized for its modified storyline, but didn't differ quite as radically as the widely-criticized #$&stain movie.
Last Man Standing Coop: a mod that makes Doom 3 palatable online. Doom 1 was noted for its coop gameplay, but Doom 3 had so many technical difficulties that I could understand why they took it out of their official product (besides which, they'd have to redesign the levels for it).

To box this up for people who haven't lived through Doom like people around or near their mid 20's-30's, we played Doom 1 and were blown away. This game didn't fuck around: you either shotgun a room chock full of bad guys or get your face ripped off and stuffed up your ass. Equally impressive was Episode 1's ending, popping two tall shouting demons we've never seen before about 20 feet in front of us. After they're dead (a ridiculous amount of bullets, if you don't have any rockets), you only have one exit, and you get screwed immediately upon entering. The epilogue even gloats about it. Next thing we know, we're fighting through a architecture that is a bizarre merging of technology and demon flesh (E2), and come out in mostly living flesh and stone walls (E3). Then, depending on whether you play E4 or not, you think you've won the game then, but no. You arrive back on Earth through teleportation to find most everyone dead, but screw that. Your pet bunny's head has been staked right in front of your face. Enter Doom 2. Space marine, bent on revenge, fights through a bunch of levels to kill a demon that's bringing demons to Earth. Epilogue mentions him settling down to help rebuild.

We've been wondering what's next for awhile. Final Doom whetted our appetites somewhat, but it wasn't enough. Now come Doom 3, which takes place on Mars. What? Wait...is this a sequel or a remake? If it's a sequel, what are they [UAC] doing making the same mistakes [experiments] again? If it's a remake, what the fuck are they doing on Mars? We bought it anyway, and were fascinated at how enemies came at you in ones or even threes. Boy, was it ever easier than dozens and dozens pouring from a room into the small hallway you're hiding in! What it lacked for quantity, it tried to make up for quality, in what was a headache-inducing orgy of non-gradient shadows, monsters covered in perpetual flawed slime and the occasional in-game cutscene. Deathmatch was laggy, and there was no coop. Honestly? I would've rather them take an old engine like Quake 3, spruce it up a bit, and picked up from where they bloody well left off.

So there you have it. Doom 3, as a remake of Doom 1, turned the series into a confused numerical mess. Doom 4 can go several ways:

a) Jump to one or any combination of Phobos/Deimos/Hell to satisfy classic gamers.
b) Skip the mess and jump to 'Hell on Earth' stage.
c) Ideally, a combination of 'a' and 'b.'

A merger with the Quake universe (the second in the series had a BFG x000, indicating that it's in the same universe as Doom) seems unlikely. I'm not sure combining demons from hell with a series that jumps from Chthonian deities to Strogg to tournament gaming, back to Strogg and a Strogg vs Earth prequel would make much sense.

Nobody really knows. All we know is it has sexy graphic and physics, and it's about some guy who's like a horror story writer and he ends up somewhere and he has to do shit. It's been under wraps for over 9000 years

Agree, but that Icarus could be interesting if they're not just riding on the SSBB wave.

Before I check out HL3, better check out the other games.

I actually liked the flash-light in DOOM3. Added allot of strategy to the game and was also a good melee weapon unlike the PoS Fists.

I would've liked it more if it didn't reveal monsters that glisten like they're covered in shampoo. Of course it forced strategy, but it was silly strategy. 'Whoops, need to look around with my flashlight. Better lower the gun...oh crap, monster! Take the light off it so I can shoot it!'  It would've been reasonable to have a coop mode where one player is the lightbearer, but even that'd get a bit goofy.

This was why so many people modded the game with duct tape. Only makes sense to attach a light to your gun in a facility that is perpetually losing power...

On another note, why so many light effects but no 'Thief' elements? Would be cool to skulk around zombies.

I while I still liked the flashlight idea, I agree that you should be able to hide in the dark.

I mean, I understood the rationalization for it (Demons live in a dark place so they can see in the dark) but it would have given more strategy, and having to hide in the dark with 30 health and no ammo for the plasma-gun while a Hell-Knight walked by would have actually been really scary.
