Okay I just bought and installed a new X-Fi Xtreme Music sound card last night.  I installed the latest drivers, got everything set up and switched my console to Game Mode.  Then I opened up BF2 go into options and then it happens.

When I select X-fi as sound option and hit apply my game closes out to desktop, WTF???

Anyone else have this problem or know a solution to it.  I mean the game already sounds 10x's better than before with my Audigy 2 card but damn the man I wan to hear it in X-fi Ultra High, lmao!

P.S. Oh and I did a search but found no questions reference my issue....

What do you mean by ultra-high? You mean selecting X-FI, then setting it on high? I have that same card, and it let's me select it, and I have had no problems as of yet with it. Do you have the on-board sound drivers disabled? Are there still drivers from an old card on your PC? I was reading through their forums, at Creative's website, and found some people did have problems with the X-Fi cards, and this game. Check out their site, and see if you can find a post with similar experiences.

That's good to hear, at least it's settled then. How do you like the card? I think it is one of the best upgrades I could of ever possibly done, I jump out of my seat half the time when I hear things really close exploding, that is when the sound bug let's me hear things.

I completely unistalled the old drivers and card and then I installed the new X-fi card and went to website, downloaded and updated with current driver for my card.  So I still can't figure out why it won't allow me to select X-fi in game?  It keeps closing out the game when I select it and hit apply?

any other suggestions?

Could be a corrupt file with BF2, or your card. Try reinstalling the card, or BF2. Is your on-board sound disabled?

Your motherboard has an on-board sound card, correct? Right click my computer, and click properties. Click hardware tab, and click on device manager, look for Sound, video, and game controllers, click the plus sign. Look for your on-board sound, right click it, and click on disable. What motherboard do you have, and i can tell you what to look for, as in the name of the card you should disable. Most likely it is a Realtek AC'97 Audio device.

I'm guessing it's the Legacy Audio Drivers but I see no way to disable it?

I looked it up, it says you have a Realtek ALC850, look for something that says Realtek, and disable that. The Legacy drivers, are not for your on-board sound.

This is all there is under Device manager.

I already uninstalled BF2 and all affiliated folders etc., reinstalled it and same thing...

Try, control panel, click Sounds, speech, and Audio devices. Then click Sounds, and audio devices on the bottom.
It should say on the top, what card is being used. Also, click the Audio, and Sound tabs on the top, and make sure it says X-FI is the default device.

I have doubled check everything on the control panel and it says SB X-fi with current driver.  I have went into the bios and made sure onboard audio was disabled.  I have re-installed my game and the sound card driver and still having this issue.

Oh well I guess, my sound is still 10x's better than it was, especially with stereo headphones....  I'll keep tinkering with it and maybe I'll come up with something.

Think of anything new let me know and thanks for the help...

Does your card have the 3 different modes, like the fatality card? If so, make sure you have gaming mode selected, and make sure you are using the latest stable drivers for your card. Creative has a habit of putting up beta drivers next to the latest drivers, I installed those before, and I was in a world of hurt, nothing but problems.

If you havent disabled your onboard sound yet, you can do so through the BIOS, which i suggest over disabling it in windows. For the A8N board it should be in the "onboard devices" section, just find the audio controller and disable it, and that will stop windows from even seeing that you have onboard sound.

I'll try to redo the sound card driver again and use the on on the install disc vs. the one off audigy's website.

Oh and Skruples I already have it disabled in bios.

FINALLY!!!  After unistalling everything (i.e. game and card) and re-installing it all, then updating the sound drivers it worked.

All I can say now is, "Why the hell did I wait so long to get X-fi?"...

Combined with the overpriced set of Stereo Headphones I bought, I can now hear everything.... this shit rocks!

Thanks all for the help!

LOL, Yeah I set renderer to X-Fi and Ultra High and the differences are beyond noticeable...

When in APC/Tank I can hear people walking around me.
When in a jet I can hear the other other jets before I can see them, and tell where there at (i.e. left, right, front).
When standing still I can here people walking before I can see them and tell what direction they are approaching from.
All general game play sounds (i.e. weapons) are extremely clear and sound completely different that before.

I got lucky and found an X-fi XtremeMusic card brand new for $100 and saved about $30 duckies, but I will say for those that can't go out and buy one today, it's worth saving for!
