I saw the post in d&st and it reminded me of the other day, so I thought I would ask what you guys think.

On thursday night I was on the way to my hotel when I came to a junction.  The roads where not quite as busy as you would think but nothing out of the ordinary, yet as I approached the lights I noticed in my rear view mirror a police car right at my back.  I merely glanced at him as almost anyone would do, and immediatly turned my eyes to the road again.  Yet as I did that I was blinded by the light from the sunset that I was driving directly into.

NENAW NENAW (or whatever fucking noise they make where you come from)

''Sir, do you realise you ran a red light''?

Usually, when I hear people on about these sort of things I dont pay attention as everyone and there mother feels victimised in these situations, however, I did atleast attempt to reason with him.

''I glanced at you in my mirror and was blinded by the light, do you think am actually going to run a red light with a police car RIGHT behind me''?

Wouldnt have a word of it.  I gave him details but I dont give a fuck, am only over here to sort out selling my appartment, am on the plane by friday so its bye bye £60/$120 fine.  Still, I think it was a bit harsh.

What do you think?

Bad timing in all honesty. And yeah, who would do that anyway? Other than someone in a stolen car or on the run anyway (I assume you dont drive that Aston )

Sometimes, common sense needs to prevail, but he has to uphold the law, even if that is harsh.

noes   Twas a rented vaxhal estate with a friggen diesil!  And I hardly look like a hardcase/boy racer :\

Still, I think there are worse offences I could of committed in that situation, it was as the lights changed anyway so assuming there isnt an F1 car on the front line of the adjacent set of lights I dont think any accident was likely.

Bad timing, yep. No way did you deserve it. My brother was fined for speeding for doing 60 in a 40 zone at 3AM, with no other cars, on a very wide road - completely clear traffic.

My other brother accidentally ran a red light and also got fined and 3 points.

Because people are never let off for minor accidental traffic offenses. The law is 100% consistent and judges do not take the situation into account at all. FUCK YEAH

By that logic then if a truck rammed into the back of me and pushed me through the red light I would still get done as:

I'm not saying he couldn't have just given you a warning but there is nothing wrong with him giving you a ticket either.  It is his call if he sees you break a law (no matter how minor) whether to ticket or warn you.  I too have been pissed at cops for giving me tickets (9 speeding tickets, 5 seatbelt tickets, obstructed license plate and noise ordinance violation) but you eventually learn to either deal with it and cough up the dough or follow all traffic laws.

When he asked if you realized you ran a red light, you should have said "no." That's as far as I think it holds up from a legal standpoint.

Did you bother to look at the lights for the other traffic?? (ie, if theirs was green then you would know yours are red)

Nah to acute an angle, I could see the stands for the lights but the side coverings bloted out what color they where.

To be honest though I had no reason to, last time I saw the light it was green, so I proceeded on, the lorry infront sort of dashed off (which I guess now looking back on it, was because he saw it going to red, so wanted out the way), and as his trailer left my immediate view, I glanced at the rear view mirror, back to the road, and then obviously the light had nothing blocking it anymore so I was blinded and boom.  Ticket.

It sucks, you didn't mean too... But you broke the law.

This is imo much worse though then if you did it on pourpouse because you were incapable of even telling what the signal was, didn't even know what was going on and just had a complete laps in concentration.

Cars can punch one hell of a hole through just about anything. Its in many cases a few tons of metal, and you got it hurling down the street.
I only takes a split second laps like that in the right situation for a lot of bad to happen.

I've had it too, its strange because you really don't even notice that you don't even notice... I once very lightly rear end a truck because all of a sudden I realized he was stopped at the left turn light when I thought we were still going...I just barely locked them up coming to a stop and would have stopped maybe a half inch past where his bumper was if he wasn't there...but still.

The light had a yellow did it not? You were not aware of what was going on on the road take it as a wake up call that you need more focus.

If you can't see the light properly you always assume it is red.

QFT. Running a red light is one of the most dangerous things to do in traffic for other drivers and even more for pedestrians.

At least you ran the red light to get a ticket.

Once I was sitting at a red light, jumped forward a couple feet after the cross roads light turned red(not expecting there to be a delay for a left turn arrow) but no part of my vehicle passed the final line into the intersection. I waited till the light eventually turned green, proceeded, and then was given a ticket for for running a red light.

There were no words to describe my rage after driving away from the cop, I punched the hell out of my trucks dash.

Later at the courthouse, the judge told me that I must have run the light, cause, "why else would I have gotten a ticket?"
