first of all before you reformat make sure you dont have any important files on the hard drive. do you have anything you want to save that is in the My Documents folder? do you want to save your bf2 profile settings? if you already backed up everything then go ahead and reinstall windows xp (it will let you reformat during installation). you dont have to uninstall the software because reformating will erase everything.

just put the windows xp installation disc on the cd-rom drive and restart your computer. when you see the text prompt asking if you want to startup from the cd just click any key. the installation of windows xp will begin. the installation program will ask if you agree to the software license by clicking f8. then it will ask if you want to repair or do a fresh windows xp installation. choose the fresh install. it will then give you a warning that the target hard drive might contain a version of windows xp. confirm that you will do a new install by pressing enter (or whatever key it is). then it will ask if you want to reformat the drive. click on the key that chooses yes (whatever it is). then you can choose if you want to do a quick format or a full format. either way works. then let it do its thing. after it finishes formating the hard drive it will install the FIRST half of windows xp. then it will reboot but this time when it asks if you want to startup from the cd just ignore it. let it boot from the partial windows xp installed on your hard drive. then the SECOND half of installation begins. this will take a few minutes and it will prompt you to confirm date and time and other settings like admin password etc. just make sure the date and time is correct (important for windows xp activation to work). as for the other settings like networking let windows use typical (default) install.

after everything is installed then you will have to activate windows xp online. if that fails then you have to call microsoft with the phone number windows xp will provide to you after it finishes loading (when you reach the desktop). then simply follow the steps to activate windows by telephone. hope this helps. good luck.

oh and this is how i do a fresh installation of windows.

1. install windows

2. make sure network card driver is properly installed (see my computer > device manager > network adapters)

3. setup networking/internet (if you dont know how to do this manually then use the internet setup wizard)

4. run windows update (updates include bug fixes and security patch plus the latest version of directx, internet explorer, outlook express, etc) the length of time this step takes depends on whether you used windows xp home edition with service pack 2 cd-rom.

5. install video card drivers

6. install sound card drivers*

7. install all other hardware drivers*

8. install software/games

*dont worry if windows xp automatically recognizes some of your hardware. it sometimes can recognize and install the drivers for network cards, sound cards, etc.
