Played it for several hours yesterday and it's a lot of fun. It runs veeery smooth even with the maximum number of opponents on the track. As you race, you earn points based on your position, racing clean sectors, amount of times you overtake someone, your finishing position and more. Amateur races make the opponents turn to ghost cars when you get close and Pro is regular racing where contact will wipe out your opponent.
There are several game modes: Versus, (standard race against 2-20 opponents), Capture the Flag, and Explorer

Tuning your car makes noticeable changes and it's very rewarding. Customizing the appearance is also available, but I stick to performance.

If you just want the basic car you could probably just about get it with the £5 pack of AP points (think you can only buy so little using paypal), plus on the first purchase you get ~30% extra free (might be 35% not sure), and they're doing a promo at the moment where you get 50% extra added again in a few months time.
Also for those who don't know, on the PT site there's an event to give away a free Quadro, you just have to sign up on MMOSite (who never send you spam), you get the car a 7 day double RP sponsor girl, decal pack and some NoS and the G-Force metre (some of that may be slightly off).
They're giving away Hexan GTs in April too, that's for signing up for an account on File Shack.
EDIT: There's weekly events for free ingame stuff too on the forums, just fun little challenges to piss about with and you get free upgrades and stuff in return.

This update takes years. This better be the best game I've ever downloaded.
The initial update does take some time. After that they're quick. It's the best free game I've ever played.

Recently a TON of new content has been added. If you haven't played lately, fire it up again. The graphics are even more smooth, new tracks, new content in track worlds, new cars, new modes even. Check it out!
