hi,
i have just bought 2gb of ram off ebay and was thinking of using some of other ram aswel so that i have 2.5gb's in total.
i was wondering which would be best to use:

2gb running at ddr400
            or
2.5gb's running at ddr333 (thats what speed my mobo reduces it to when i use 4 sticks of ram 2 x 1gb & 2x 256mb)

any ideas?

2GB should perform better, and I doubt the extra 512MB would be noticable anyway.

Only if you plan on playing most games, or running several applications at once. Otherwise, no.

Your motherboard probably reduces your speed to 333mhz with 4 sticks in because the 512 sticks are not designed to run at 400mhz. All of the ram in your system has to operate at the same speed, so the bios has to throttle faster ram to meet slower ram specifications. The memory timings on your older ram are probably also a great deal slower than whatever you just bought, so If I were you I wouldn't bother with your old ram. Remember to put your new ram in slots 1 & 3, or your motherboard will not run it in dual channel mode. (I believe this is the case with pretty much all motherboards)

One of these days I might write a RAM guide, though judging from the attention paid to the last guide I wrote for this section I probably wont bother >:\
