Hi there. Been playing BF2 for awhile, and I've always noticed that in some maps when I'm playing online(especially Karkand unfortunately) where theres alot of smoke or fog (or for example if I'm running behind a tank trying to repair it because some asshat took off with it after I got out) my FPS drops and it gets difficult to respond if, say, I come under attack suddenly. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for eliminating or reducing the effects. I already have all my settings set to Low or Off except for Textures, which is set to Medium. Anti-aliasing (which is what I was told helps handle smoke/fog) is set to Off as well.

Currently i'm running a 2.66 gHz, Windows XP HE, 1gig ram, GeForce FX5200 (yes, yes, I need to upgrade, I know [ironically enough I've only had it a few months], but theres still rent that has to be paid ), on a cable modem. Any constructive ideas or suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you for your time and patience.

I typically run on minimal settings, just to lighten my CPU load...yes, I said CPU.

Amazingly, BF2 acutally needs a half-ass VPU to run at full power, most of the lag you get comes from the CPU having to run ballistics and physics algorithems constantly.   Try toning down partical quality (not perfectly sure what its called in the game).

If you have the ability, dont let BF2 decide anything about the video settings, do that in your video card's settings.  These settings tend to make things run better than a game override.

You say that you get the lag behind a tank...perhaps this is because you are following an object a close range that has many more directional properties than infantry.

Video card looks like.  Depends on the type of RAM as well.

Check this site out, it will help out a lot.
