I play on the BF2S:AU server.... When I play BF2 at all. Mostly on Sat Night But Secks Patrol with Raven, R3v, Fenris, Smokey, Raidensen ect.....

[3] Make sure there isnt anyone totally 'owning' or any multi TKers (i.e. no extra large or negative scores)

When I'm not playing on a bf2s server, I'll look for :

Unless Ive been asked to play along with someone, Ill normally decide what mod I wana play before loading up BF2 (AF/EF/SF/Vanilla) and what map/maps.

I PICK my favourite server, then check the population, if its too high or low, i then go on to my next favourite server, note: favourite server is always 24/7 Warlord IO... i just like it for some reason.

2. Check faves for said map(Mine keep on getting deleted with BF2 reinstalls, so it;s pretty small)
3. If found, play(Go to step 5), otherwise Enter into Server search.
4. Pick a 64 player map, with around 15-25 people.
5. Play, if I don't like the crowd(I have a subconscious set of rules as to how they should behave) Then I leave, go to step 2

friends first but if there on a server that I ping badly on I will find another server that is populated and pings me well
