The top photo would be a "gas mask" to most people. NBCR specialists might take to calling it a protective mask (because it does do more than just filter gas).

Proper Military nomenclature is Field Protective Mask. It is common practice to refer to it as a Gas Mask. Real men hold their breath because I dont give a shit what anyone says, it is damn impossible to put lead in flesh when you are wearing that thing.
