WiC is RTT but still an involving game. The CoH expansion is supposed to be quite good and also DoW is fairly balanced for a large game, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg for system requirements.

Get any Blizzard game and you'll love it. If you patient you can wait for Starcraft 2. I still play the original one to get my mind going.

Halo is for noobs, and console RTS game sucks, and WiC is not strategy. I wouldn't call it a real time tactics game either.

I suggest the Dawn of War Series and Company of Heros(both are nearly identical gameplay wise) like everyone else, they are simply fantastic.  You could also try Empire earth 1/2, 3 sucks though.  Sumpreme Commander is ok, its very bland, and doesnt make very good use of scale, just lags you down, and is just plain slow.  Age of Empires is a good series, as well as the Stronghold Series, you should also try out the Total War series, not really my thing personally, but they are very strategic.

Supreme Commander for epic-scale. Slightly slow in multiplayer.
World in Conflict for special effects and excellent multiplayer.
Company of Heroes for the Battlefield 2 take & hold element, Opposing Fronts for even better graphics.
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War Platinum for smaller-scale sci-fi wars and a stable engine.

I enjoyed it up to the point where my Quad-core 4GB RAM friend's host machine was lagging in multiplayer. Supposed to be better now.

Don't listen to this idiot. For sheer scale, SupCom wins easily. With inbuilt "mods" such as x2 resources and a recent expansion - if you haven't picked this up, you owe it to yourself.

Rise of Nations. You can play in the Stone Age and advance to the Modern Age. You can also set which age to start in, or you can only play in one age if you like.

Lots of stuff to do. Nuclear weapons, aircraft, infantry and cavalry/armour combat. Basic resource-collection and age-advancement. Published by Microsoft, made by Big Huge Games, who assisted in AoE III The Asian Dynasties expansion.

steelie's looking for more Modern Combat, and not sci-fi. Besides, the same old gets kinda boring. WCIII is great, but WCII bests it. Now C&C III, unoriginal piece of garbage. After all these years, they bring back Tiberium and botch it all up! Thank you EA!
