Hey guys, i could use some help here.

After installing the new Catalyst drivers bf2 crashes to the desktop every time i try to connect to a server.
Playing singleplayer games is still possible, though.

Any other ideas than deinstalling the 6.2 version and installing the 6.1 again?

Do you have the .net 1.1 framework installed? You have to have this installed before you install 6.2. if you have done this, rollback the driver to 6.1 and then try a reinstall....

quick suggestion - ensure that VPU Recover is NOT running, its an ATI killer with BF2.  Look for ATI tweaks at www.tweakguide.com for more information.  Took me a long time to get my ATI to behave, this was an excellent resource.

Hmm i tried out the Omega drivers (ver 6.1) now but the problem is still there.

Seems pretty much like the 6.2 drivers corrupted something.

Fuck! I wanna play BF2!

The 6.2 Cat Drivers work just fine for me- x850xt I'll try disabling VPU recover for fun though.
Also maybe..try "Drive Cleaner Pro" http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Unin … onal.shtml

Not sure if this will help ya - but I seriously spent far too much time tweaking my system - mostly related to the fact that I'm running an ATI.  Here are my settings, and I'm seriously happy with what I see in game:

Expect your system to be a bit different - they all are, and power and performance system wide will have an impact:

ATI Settings:
I'm runnign Dual LCDs, both set to 1280 X 1024, 32bit color - 60Hx refresh
3D Refresh Rate Override - Disabled
Anti-Aliasing : Application Controlled
Anisotropic Filtering : Application Controlled
Catalyst AI: Advanced
MinMap Detail Level : High Quality
SmartShader : None
Direct3D Settings:
  Enable geometry instancing : On
Support DTX Texture formates : On
  Alternative Pixel Center : Off
OpenGL Settings
  Triple Buffering : On
  Force 24-bit Z-buffer depth : Off
AGP Settings:
  AGP Speed : 8X
  Fast Write : Off
  AGP Write : On
  AGP Read : On
PCI Settings
  PCI Write : On
  PCI Read : On
VPU Recover : Disabled

BIOS Tweak:
I Opened my AGP Apeture to 128 from 64 - setting it to 256 seemed to hinder stabliity

BF2 Settings:
Display resolution : 1280x1024  (Important to match desktop resolution)
  Terrain : Medium
  Effects : High
  Geometry : High
  Texture : Medium
  Lighting : Medium
  Dynamic Shadows : High
  Dynamic Light : High
  Anti Aliasing : 2X
  Texture Filtering : Medium
  View Distance : 100%

For the most part, its really difficult to see the difference between a Medium & High video setting.  Load FRAP and play with these settings to set your preferences.

One additional item I started using was ATI Tool (http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/) to overclock my ATI - I don't push it much, and only during the game.  I push my standard Core/Memory rates from 425/432 to 475/491.

If you are running a Dual Core processor, be sure to do the folowing:
Launch BF2
Alt-Tab over to Task Manager
Locate the BF2.exe Process entry, Right Click and 'Set Affinity', uncheck your second core.

This binds the game to a single CPU - much more stable - especially on very low ping servers and LAN games.

I truly hope this helps...after all, you may be worth 2 points some day, but only if you can get in the game.

DeadJim, there's a known issue which has been documented on ATi's Release Notes that affect BF2.  It says...

Battlefield 2: The game may exit to the Windows desktop after the game logo is displayed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-21660
However, the biggest hurdle I have found is that I cannot find the article that documents this "bug" and even searching by ID gave me no result.

I suggest uninstalling the drivers completely and going with 6.1 as a try.  I cannot tell you personally whether this'll work as I do not run an ATi card anymore.  But the 6.1 drivers would be the one I'd still use today if I was.

I solved the problem by reinstalling BF2 and SF.

Pretty confusing for me as i am absolutely sure the problem was risen by the installation of the Catalyst drivers.

I'm running Omega Drivers 6.1 now and everything seems fine so far.

Anyway thanks to you all.

PS: Giving 6.2 another try after reinstalling the game ended in the same way - CTD on server join attempt.

I just installed the cat 6.2 on my X1900 and it runs flawlessly.

I did remember seeing on the ati site in the 6.2 release notes under "known issues" that there was a problem with crash to desktop during the load screens.  There was a link to further info about the issue which I didnt read.  Odds are you'll find your answer there.

EDIT:

Here is the actual item from ATI:

Battlefield 2: The game may exit to the Windows desktop after the game logo is displayed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-21660

I normally do so and i never experienced any bugs with ATI's drivers before. That's why I felt save and just installed them though I knew there was such a known issue.

@ShotYourSix did you read sixshot's post? The search on that ID is not giving any results, trust me i tried that!

Actually I missed that post......whoops (musta thought it was my own .  That sucks that the re-in didnt' do the trick.

Just a thought here......I'm thinking about how the notes say that the problem is a CTD at the Game Logo screen.  How about going into your BF2 folder (C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Movies) and re-naming the .BIK files (Dice, Intro, EA, Legal) which basically just kills the intro Logo's and the opening movie?

Not sure but one of these could be the point at where you are crashing.  I know it's a longshot but if you haven't already done this it might do the trick.

I spent some time on google and found hundreds of refs. to that topic number but unfortunately no links to it.  I'm guessing it does not exist.  Have you talked with ATI Tech Supp?

Just a note: the URL given above should be at tweakguides.com, and not tweakguide.com which is just another parasitic, useless fucking ad portal.

Specifically it should be http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html
