The Unreal series have never been particularly noted for their Single-Player. Especially Unreal 3... people were generally unhappy with how they changed it from a 'tournament'- where you manage your teams and compete for cash prizes- and into a 'storyline' mode. It doesn't really suit the Unreal series, and it definitely affects the re playability/length when you can only complete the game once before it gets boring!
But yes, you are right, the Multiplayer is definitely where it is at . Hours of fun. The ranking system is very interesting too; it all seems great in theory, but I'm not quite sure how it works in practice. I've seen people in the top100 based on their ELO rating, purely because they happened to join a server with one of the top guys and then get a few kills on them. I've gone from top200 ranking to top2000 in a day, when my performance hasn't worsened at all. Just getting unlucky I suppose - getting fragged by some new player really pulls your rating down.
You mean the Unreal Tournament series, I assume. The first Unreal was very much single player oriented, as was Unreal 2.
