Do I have to match both my video cards exactly for them to be able to work in SLI?

I believe so yes. Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to?

I thought it had to be same manufacturer....so if i have a gigabyte 6600gt...i could team up with a XFX 6600gt then?

The clock speeds make a difference then?  Like my XFX is a 490/1300 7800 GTX, can it be matched with a BFG 450/1200 7800 GTX?

you can have different manufacturers now.  as long as you have the same gpu on each card.

Correct, but it will run both cards at the lower cards speeds. Kind of useless if you ask me. I would buy two of the same brand as well, as the same GPU, just to be on the safe side.

just overclock the bfg one, google coolbits, its an overclocking program that lets u change clock speeds only, not confusing. so just OC ur bfg to the same clock speeds as the xfx. trust me, it wont damage ur card, im using the same clock speeds on my sparkle 7800 gtx as the xfx one

If you're going to buy 2 then get the same ones, if you've already got one I beleive the new drivers do let you mix and match cards of the same GPU,

but

if you have say a 256MB card and buy a 512MB card then both cards will use 256 wasting the extra money you just spent.

And 2x256MB cards do not add up to 512 as each card needs to load THE SAME TEXTURES

I just upgraded from 2x6600GT to 2x7800GT, big difference. I didn't get 7800GTX's as the difference isn't supposed to be that big when in SLi

Unless you've got megabucks to spend on 2x7800GTX 512MB cards

Or you could wait until QUAD SLI Motherboards are available - holy shit

SURE, except crossfire takes an overpriced mastercard to go with your regular vid card.

Damn, that's one biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig HDTV if it has a resolution that size   But I can at least visualize playing on a 30" panel.  Sorry, just had to nitpick about panels and HDTV.

The crossfire edition is actually cheaper, so what are you talking about?

you have to use the same gpu!!! I have two SLI-Systems, one with two ASUS 7800GTX (just plugged in an lets go), the other one with a leadtek 7800GT and a Asus N7800GT. You have to use the newest driver for sure!
consider: the cards should have the same clockings, some of the cards are overclocked by the manufacturer and will slow down if there is also a slower card of another brand inside.

@Quad-SLI-Flamers: have you ever seen a system that runs with quad-Sli?! I guess not so why do ya criticize something you dont know! I´ve tested Quad-Sli with two Asus 7800GT-Dual and it rocks like hell (even if it is too expensive)
