HL1 seriously changed my life, you NEED to play it, or just give up on PC gaming and go hang yourself.

yeah, its a pretty awesome game that will keep you occupied for some hours. but really if you are not interested in playing the game and only knowing the story that surrounds this game then you can find something on google and there will surely be something that will tell you the complete story. But surely I advise you to complete HL1 just because its a very nice game.

But these are spoilers, you cannot call yourself a gamer, or better yet an FPS gamer without having played half life.

HL1, HL1 expansions (opposing forces *optional*), HL2, HL2 EP1, HL2EP2.

HL1, blueshift, opposition force, Hl2

blueshift and opposition force are expansions where the main characters are people from different sides and positions in HL. it will tell more about the story

I've played HL2, through, SEVEN times now. Seriously, seven. From the train to the Citadel. I also played HL2 before I played HL1, I'd say HLH2 is even better than HL1. Much more story. I think HL2 is basically a film that you get to live. It's teh most amazing series of gmes ever.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Ok so does this pack sound good on steam for about $15? Half-Life, Half-Life:Blue Shift, Opposing Force, and Team Fortress Classic? And get half-life source some other time?

I played Half-Life 2 before HL1. I actually felt that #2 was more awesome when you were completely clueless as to what was happening since 2 is very different to 1. The thing about Half-Life 1 is that it's very "90's Game", it has narrow corridors, the traditional "bosses" and a fairly unrealistic storyline. Half-Life 1 is the height of 90s games, but a 90s game it still is.
Half-Life 2 however is the real story. You'll find that the events you play in Half-life 1 have little to do with the environment of Half-Life 2. The developers realised that what happened in Half-Life 1 was pretty far-fetched, and only really referred to the realistic and important bits, namely Gordon fighting his way out of Black Mesa and the fact that he caused the small tear between Earth and Xen in the first place. It doesn't really mention that Gordon actually went to Xen, and the only characters who mention anything about that part of Half-Life 1 are the Vortigaunts and only in passing. All the really important stuff in the main Half-Life story before Half-Life 2 really happened while Gordon was in stasis and you figure that stuff out along the way.

This is only my opinion of course and I am far from saying that Half-Life One is not worth playing, however Half-Life 2 onwards is the most important part of the actual story and Half-Life One only had a few details, (important nonetheless,) which you can pick up in Half-Life 2. So to answer your question, no, but still play Half-Life One, (doesn't really matter what order, although I suppose it is good to play things in the order they were intended.)
