That is a stalemate, and a stalemate in chess results in a draw.

the king isnt in the "line of fire" of any of the pieces, it cant move, because kings cant move into check, but its not actually in check.
I don't get it how do you get him in check then?

I'm assuming that your last move resulted in the screen shot you showed (and it is supposed to be black's move next). I don't know what move you most recently did, but putting your opponent in a stalemate is not how you win chess.Git.R.Don3 wrote:

.... well, unless you are the one at a disadvantage.
move queen one space further away from the screen, except its the computers go, so i dont think you canGit.R.Don3 wrote:

if you moved there though it would be checkmate
There's a reason why I don't play chess.OrangeHound wrote:

I tried once, and my friend got me in 5 moves.
UBERFAIL
Check is when the king is in immediate danger of being attacked. The next move he makes has to protect his king from falling and usually involves moving the piece to another spot, but can also be achieved by moving another piece into a position where it blocks the attacking piece.Git.R.Don3 wrote:

Checkmate is achieved when the king is in check and has no where to move that would take the king out of check.
Stalemate occurs when the king is not in check, but any possible moves would put the king in to a check position.
oh cool I think I got it now, I just won game number one
you can't force a king into check.

Play there if you want some competition down the road.

Sure...my brother and I play all the time, he is a ranked chess player through the USCF and that site. He used to be a chess instructor, now he just beats me all the time while giving me advice. I'd love to start a chess gathering there, even though it costs a little $$ to register (but it is worth it).OrangeHound wrote:

It's called a stalemate, which is a draw, when the enemy or yourself cannot move any of the pieces on the board and there is no checkmate implemented.
Everyone who reads this thread should either be able to play chess or should learn how.
