Hey I just bought an Inspiron 9300 and unfortunately It DID NOT have the beautiful Geforce 6800 Ultra 256 MB, however I got the 128 MB X300.

Here is my dilemma:

My desktop at home has

Sapphire 9600 Pro Atlantis
1 Gig Kingston Value Ram
1.8 Ghz P4 Northwood

It runs pretty smothly on High Resolution Medium Settings

Now I get my new 9300 and the specs on this are

ATI X300 Mobile 128MB Vid Card
1 Gig Ram
Pentium M 2.13 Ghz
100 Gb 5400 RPM HD
17" WXGA (Not UXGA and not with True Life )

And when I turn it on 1024 x 768 With Medium

JAGGED AS HELL! Chokes everywhere!

On Low

Still not smooth and not very nice looking either.

What the hell is wrong with my laptop?

I have latest Catalyst 6.1 Drivers for the Mobile and I don't know what the hell is going on

PLEASE HELP

Thanks

Acutally I think your just lucky with the 9600. I wouldn't expect it to run that well, are you sure it's not a 9800.

I'd seriously just upgrade the desktop.

-------------

As for the laptop... not sure could be a bunch of things.

Speed-stepping or over heating reducing CPU speed? IF not the CPU is probably fine.
The memory is probably not dual channel but it should be enough (should).
Harddrive is slow and there may be some swapping going on... look for the HD light when the chop starts. <-- 2G might clear that up.
Often times the graphics interface is not that good on laptops and the x300 is nothing to write home about either.

Well... I think you are out of luck here... The X300 is not really much better than the 9600 regarding performance. The card also has only half of RAM... and it is for a fact that laptop GPU's are not as high performing as desktop GPU's.... If you want to play games on a laptop, you should pay considerably more and see to it that the laptop has at least an X700 GPU

I think the x300 is shared video memory, as opposed to the 9600 being dedicated.  Go into your video settings under control panel (or right click on your desktop, choose properties, click the settings tab, and choose advanced) and make sure your video settings for your laptop are set for maximum performance as opposed to efficiency.  Sometimes with shared memory lappies they toss RAM back and forth depending on what you're using, so if you dedicate a full 128 MB of your laptops ram and make sure its settings are high, it might fix your problem.

I don't think that this has something to do with the GPU... what are the other specs of you system?

I play on an Inspiron 9300 which is pretty much the same spec as yours with 2 key differences:

1 - 7200 rpm drive.....makes quiet a difference for load times etc.
2 - I got the NVidia 6800 / 256MB card.

I run everything High @ 1024x768 and it is as sweet as......

These laptops are more than capable of running the game spot on with the NVidia card in and i suspect it is as simple as that.

PS: I recently upgraded to 2GB RAM and apart from reducing the "Verify Client Data" time didn't really make a difference although with that GFX card it might help you becuase it is shared mem i think (as per TehSeraphim).

To clear up from other comments RAM is DDR2 and the bus speeds are mroe than fast engough to keep up if everything else is going full on.

I have an HP PC as well and that ran awful slow / jerky etc etc until i dropped an NVidia 5000 Series card with 128MB onboard and it made a major difference.  No GFX card - no performance no matter what else the machine has in my experince.

Sorry!

And what about the Harddrives? S-ATA? UDMA (IDE)? What is the Rating of the RAM? PC3200? PC 4000? Does the RAM operate Dual-Band?

By the way guys... I am not quite familiar with Desktop-Purchase habits in the US and Canada.... but I do have a question.... Why do you buy prefrabricated Computers? I did buy my last prefab desktop in 1998... I sort of still have it... but the only original parts that remained are the case and the 3.5" floppy drive... everything else is custom built by myself with single components....

Sorry to have to tell you this dude, but you are seriously screwed. Dell suck arse when it comes to gaming laptops/desktops. I would take your Dell back and ask for your money back. I dont know what Dell is like in the States, but in NZL/Aussie, Dell is abysmal in sales and support, especially in trying to buy uograded components (like trying to upgrade your x300 to a 6800). My friend bought a Dell Inspirion about 2 years ago and is STILL trying to buy a better video card off them. (Dell would rather he buy another laptop off them than a better component)

Laptop  does not equal Desktop in term of upgrades you can do...it's not Dell or any other vendor that is the problem.

The problem is the form factor... Laptop cases, fans etc... are optimized for specific graphic cards.

Only a few laptop on the market can say they are upgradable. And when you look at their form factor, you understand why... they have all desktop componant and weight a ton.

I have 2 gaming laptops... the XPS gen 1 (for which you could upgrade the GPU) and the XPS gen 2 (again you could upgrade the GPU).

These laptop are one the best gaming laptop on the market, I'm not the one saying, most reviews say so and with my XPS gen 2 I can have close to 3 hours autonomy on the battery.

I never had problems with Dell's supports....I guess I was lucky or I made sure before I call to know what I needed to ask to get what I want.

Invader - Dell in the UK is somewhat different to the experience you have.  I have the same laptop (9300) with the Nvidia card and everything runs spot on 1024x768 / High without a glitch.

The system specs here and upgrade options (that are available on laptops) are all pretty straight forward and easy to do.  As said above its not the same mechanics for a laptop and in fact many video cards are integrated in to the motherboard so a new video card quite often means a new motherboard.....

Damn where do I find that stuff out, I went to the HP website and it doesn't really help?
