I just decided to make a skin today for the deagle so I read some tuts. It's just a beginner skin though
OMG hax!
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
hhaha NIIIIIIICE!
Thats not a skin thats a recolour.
in 1.6 I had a skin that replaced the tactical shield with a dead terrorist
You held him by the neck with one hand and used you gun with the other...

do you mean the gun? Its solid orange?
are you gonna unwrap the model and make a texture for it?

Love is the answer
No need to unwrap the model. There is already a pretty decent map for it from the defaults. If you want to start from scratch id suggest looking around though for a blank uv map and just skin that.
so thats the deagle you claimed you were owning bots with
Make a tad more yellow and you've got Duke Nukem's gun.
It's the same thing.ShadowFoX wrote:

That is...
Brilliant!

No quite on the contrary its not the same thing. A skin would be you skinning the weapon from scratch. From what I can see all you did was change the color thus it is a recolor.Darkhelmet wrote:

where would you find a blank uvw map for the gun? lol
and yeah you could use the existing texture and edit it in photoshop...
I misread and thought he made his own weapon...

No, that would be modeling. Skinning is just changing/creating the outside (skin) look, texture, color etc... of the weapon.ShadowFoX wrote:

Ok its obvious to me that you have no clue of what your talking about. However I will do you the favor and educate you. When you take a existing texture and alter it its called a recolor. When you take a base UV map like this.
And you texture it to look like something you can recognize that is called skinning. Im not even gonna bother to explain what modelling is.

Ok, i'm just going by what i've seen on fpsbanana which is where I get "skins." And the "recolors" and located under "skins" even though they are just "recolors." I'm not a pro or anything. And I didn't use photoshop I used Gimp.
Fpsbanana is the bad neighborhood of the game content modification scene. Its a common misconception to call a recolor a skin because most people dont know the difference. If the original skin was improoved a whole lot and altered with new features whether it be engravings etc you could technically call it a reskin.
Best example I can come up with.
Reskin.
