And why do they have to use giant robots as a mean to get the point across? Why cant the main character use his own strength? Why does it have to be either Magic or Technology that is the backbone of the story? Why cant there be one show where the main character is tough like a motherfucker and fights his own battles? Most importantly why are the girls always emotionally vulnerable?
I know i'm sounding like an asshole american but it's true. Anime is for kids not because its a cartoon, But because the stories are explained in a childish manner most of the time. Think about it! Name one show other then Evangelion(Which rocked btw because everyone in the end died!) Which explained the plot in an adult manner.
There's a lot of really great anime, but there's a hell of a lot more really shit anime.

The Ghost in the Shell stuff too, particularly the Stand Alone Complex series'.
There's a lot of variation in anime, and whilst lots (most) of it is crap, some of it is great.
Why do they often have big robots or magic? Because lots of anime is set in either fantasy or sci-fi settings, simple as that.
