I'm now trying to upgrade my old pc with 512mb RAM, 1,8 GHz etc. for future lanpartys at home, and the first component out is the graphics card! YEYYY    I have AGP and I wonder which one of the "ATI Palit 9800 PRO 256mb" and the "Nvidia Palit Geforce 6600GT 128mb" is the best. They're on the same price class.
Which one has the best performance and which one works best with my half-gig of RAM?

I don't know, I am an Nvidia fan, so I say get the Nvidia one hehe
Right now I use Nvidia 6600GT 128 mb PCI-E (which is better than the AGP thingy) and it r00lz!

But I dont have the energy to get all the stuff to PCI-E, since then I'll just have to buy even more parts.

AGP cards are already being phased out by manufacturers so you are going to have to move to PCI-E anyways.  But since you are sticking with AGP for now, I say go for a X800XL (if you can find one).  Its a pretty damn good card for the money.

I am limited by money, so I use;
AMD athlon 1.9Ghz
768Mhz RAM (3x256)
nVidia 6600 256MB

It runs just fine and if someone tells me how, I'll show you a screen shot.

It's nvidia for me.
I'm just waiting for my mate to upgrade his 6600GT OC  hehe.

I'm on 9800pro 128mb ram atm, jsut wandered onto ebay and picked up an X800XT platinum edition for £160.

I'm stuck on AGP for now, but if I buy a new card i'd like it to last for a while. My friend jsut bought a 6600 gt and says its pants. Stretch your budget a bit more if you can and get the next level up. It'll be worth it.

I was using an ATI Radeon 9800pro as well but I just upgraded to an X850XT Platinum. To tell you the truth the graphical difference isn't that amazing and in my opinion, wasn't worth the money.

Stop advicing me to pick a better card than these I've chosen because I'm just buying one to be ABLE to use another computer for lans etc.
I just wanna know if a 256mb ATI 9800 PRO is better than an 128mb nVidia Geforce 6600GT. I've chosen these two from exactly the same price group since the 6600GT can come in a lot different performances and prices.

i would say the 9800 pro is better cuz its got a beter support cache but i would go for the 6600 gt cuz in my opion it better.  i know it might be a little of topic but but the 5500 geforce i nknow its a little worse but still use the money for the new nvidia thats coming out or if ur not going to buy either go for the 9800

I don't know much about the 9800 pro but I can tell you about the 6600 gt. It is a great card, I have one and everything plays fine. I have all my setting on medium and you can't tell. this is just alittle advice why don't you save your money and wait until the end of the year when microsoft launchs their new operating system vista and get a brand new PC plus by the time goes by you can get and even better card then that just a thought.

Dude...It's only January, end of year is a long ways off. And who wants Vista when it first comes out? At least wait for the first service pack.
