I read alot of you talking about PCI-E cards. What is better about these then AGP cards? and y do u suggest adapting so you can update to PCI-E in the future?

also, how do u know what mobo's can use a pci-e card?

PCI-Express is the future for graphics cards now, as they will eventually phase out AGP all together. I think the best out at the moment is PCI x17.

So how do I know if a mobo has a PCI-E slot. Most I have looked at dont

I can get one of these from a friend brand new;

ASRock K8-UPGRADE VM800

but cant find if it has pci-e. What do you people think of this mobo?

That's an AGP board. Also, VIA sucks. Stay away at all costs.

Im not sure about that motherboard, but if you want to see some with PCI-E go to

www.ebuyer.co.uk

and have a look there in their motherboard section, click on the sidebar for whatever type you need (like what socket your processor is) and then look at the motherboards. Most will tell you if their PCI-E.

1. Google
2. Enter VM800 into search box.
3. Hit Enter/click Google Search.
4. Click the first hit.
5. Read until about halfway down where it says:

Expansion Slot
- ASRock Future CPU Port (Yellow-colored): Flexible Socket939 upgrade interface for ASRock 939CPU Board(Optional)
- 1 x AGP8X/4X slot , 1.5V
- 2 x PCI slots( PCI 2.2 compliance)
- 1x AMR slot

6. See that it does mention AGP, but it doesn't mention PCI-E.
7. Realise that it mean that it supports AGP and not PCI-E.
8. Learn from the experience how to use search facilities...

the AGP slot is brown. (Mostly) and a little further to the inside than the other PCI slots.

PCIe is white(?) and longer

Nothing is better about the cards themselves. Video cards have just gotten to the point where they can handle more data than AGP can handle. It's like having a Ferrari with a speed limiter of 30MPH on it.

AMD skt 939=PCI-e
Intel LGA775=PCI-e

AMD skt 754=AGP
Intel skt 478=AGP

Unfortunately, though generally true, it's not quite that simple - it is a good rule-of-thumb though...

Anyhoo, the best way to find out what any motherboard does or does not support is still called Google.

You can sometimes find better information than Google from online stores (like newegg) and store browsers (pricescan). Some of them even have search functions that list only the devices with desired attributes. Make sure to double-check with the manufacturer site on stats, however.

If you Google up some benchmarks, you will see a significant difference between PCI-e and AGP cards...and don't fall into the trap of thinking, for instance, that all AMD S939 motherboards are PCI-e. Some still have AGP.
