Patching for BF2 hasn't definately ended yet.
The admins over at the Official EA Forums have just spend months collecting feedback from the community, and have published the results of the summary on the forums (

The summary has been sent to DICE, so they can themselves summarise it, to see if there is a need for a patch, however as EAUK_Protagonist states....

As mentioned before, the decision on whether or not there will be a further patch for Battlefield 2 has yet to be made. This is not because anyone is wandering around oblivious to the fact that the game would benefit from further technical improvement and gameplay tweaks, rather because there are significant other factors to take into consideration. Not least of all that the game is now approaching 2 years old, and as such it would be a great rarity for a patch to be released so late in a game's lifespan. However it is because of the number of people who are playing it that the discussion is ongoing.
Given that there is a lack of concrete final answer on the future of BF2, we're in a position where until we know otherwise we're waiting for more information. That news could come in a week, it could come in six months, there is no timeline on this decision being made, and while it's frustrating to be holding for further information, right now that's where we are.
The summary thread was never intended to be a "what should we fix in the next patch" topic. That information was sent through to Dice earlier in the year. What would be most useful in a patch has been well known for some time. Rather, the summary thread was intended to round off the bulk of community reporting until such a time as something new comes along. That's not to say that support will stop for the game, far from it, rather that it represents closing the feedback on the game as it stands right now. Even then, regular reports will be made into Dice based on your comments here.
