Actually, no it's not. Well, it might be for XP Home - I can't find a definitive answer regarding Home edition.

XP Pro has a 4GB limit and this may also be the case for Home - some places say 2, others say 4...

(see:http://www.support.microsoft.com/defaul … mp;SD=tech)
Don't know what you'll think - but i believe you have a 2GB limit unless you'r an a 64-bit OS (so buy that, or download a test and check..)

Get OCZ Platinum!!!! It has the lowest timings I've seen, although you also have to manually set these ones in your BIOS to the specified capability.

Oh, Chaintech... hmm... In the future, don't buy Chaintech motherboards - they're crap.

Ok, now as for the BIOS settings for RAM - I downloaded a pdf of your mobo manual, and from what I can see, there's nothing in the bios that allows you to change RAM timings - this could mean they'll work fine, or it could mean they won't - and as it's a chaintech, I'd guess at the latter - they'll almost certainly 'work', just not at the advertised speed/timings.

Also, had you noticed on page 1, there's a boxout saying "Due to CPU specifications limitation, two DDR400 memory modules inserted into DIMM1/3, three DDR400 into DIMM1/2/3, or four DDR400 into DIMM1/2/3/4 is not recommended."

And again, 'cos it's chaintech, there's bugger all information about what configuration(s) are recommended.

I think you might have problems getting 4 DIMMs of any kind working dual-channel.

As I said, in the future, don't buy Chaintech - they're crap. And, if you can afford it, I'd go buy a new, better motherboard. From a decent manufacturer. Right now. Gigabyte are good.

Sorry.

*Smacks head*

Sorry - I'm talking with my ass here...

Yeah, I'v had this discussion with my bro and we'r all in agreement really (if I could read...) for pro it's 4GB limit, but for Home he claims it's 2GB (and I'm buying 4GB with my new rig and won't buy pro yet - so my brother is laughing like a madman...)

So what all those links are saying is the same as you'r saying (which is why i was given them in the first place - because pro is 4GB and home is not...)

Sorry about being a smacktard...

Hey, at least you're man enough to admit it.

Oh, and if you're buying a new rig, see if you can get Pro OEM when you buy the rig - way cheaper than getting it later.

Well - I could probably have started ranting and flaming... wonder where that would have gotten me

I have no problems accepting the fact that I have lost an argument, and when I do it's only fair to admit it..

Which leads me to my favourite Dream Theater lyric quote
"Respect is not a one way street"

So I guess if I want people to take me seriously, I'll have to own up to any and all mistakes I make..

Thanks for not flaming me right away tho

EDIT: Yeah - nice going editing while I'm replying

I'll download the 64-bit windows and see if it works, if it does I'll buy that one.. If not I'll get a student Pro OEM for a reduced price..

Cheers

Sorry, but that's wrong. 1 DIMM (stick/module) will NOT run dual-channel. Dual-channel is only, I repeat ONLY, possible with 2 DIMMs. And as he said his motherboard will support upto 4GB then he should buy 2 DIMMs (either 2x512MB or 2x1GB depending on what his budget will allow).
I'm surprised no-one's picked me up on this yet...

It actually seems my assertions above are slightly out of date - a IT guru-type friend of mine informs me that actually some motherboards will run double-sided DIMMs dual-channel...

However, these motherboards are rare and what I said is generally true in the vast majority of cases (which I guess is why no-one's picked me up on it)...

you can run 4 1 gb sticks in dual mode but the timing of all four should be identical . using matched pairs of ram is the only way imo .

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ … l_145.html  - im guesing the dual channel kits option from that list.

which brings us to this page - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ … _Kits.html - what one can i go for?  my ram isnt ballistix but it looks alot better, both made by crucual i think so would work wouldnt it not?

so i would chose the top one on that page, my question is, dont i have to change the bios or anything like that for dual channel ram????        or by plugging these 2 sticks into my last 2 slots just auto enable it
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ … _Kits.html

kinda confusing to me, probaly didnt type that up very well lol, hope someone could help me on this issue though

thanks, Lynx

I'm pretty sure but not positive that only the socket 939 AMD 64's are able to utilize dual channel memory. From there you would have to check specific motherboards.
No clue about Intel because I don't use them. I do know for a fact that some of the Nforce2 motherboards from the Athlon XP era support dual channel memory. And I also know it DOES NOT actually give you 2x the memory performance over single channel.

I've run XP, XP Pro, and XP64 while having 4gb ram (dual channel 1gb x 4) in the machine and NONE of those systems showed the full 4gb (infact, XP64 would CRASH if I had all 4gb in. )

Generally speaking, the XP line is supposed to support 4gb, but I would not trust it.

2GB sticks are available.
You can ever find 4gb and 8gb sticks -- of course, just ONE of those will cost you more than your entire system.

Well, I hate to say this Lynx, but I think the only way going to know is to do one of the following:

1. Find someone else that has the same motherboard, and RAM as you have and intend to buy and ask them how it went.

2. Email Chaintech.

3. Just go buy some RAM, stick 'em and pray.

Option 1 is probably unlikely to happen. Option 2, what with it being Chaintech, is unlikely to get you anywhere (one of the reasons I dislike Chaintech so much is there complete lack of customer support). Option 3 could work out fine, or it may not.

You implied you currently had basic Crucial RAM, yes? if so, buy more of the same (infact, whatever your current RAM is, buy more of the same) - it's by far the safest option, and believe me, you're probably not going to notice that much of a difference between that and Ballistix, or any other high-end ram types - the difference in speed really is marginal.

They have the crucial memory advisor on their website. Anyway here is what is compatible with your board, and click performance RAM, Ballistix is on there.

I have been doing some research:
XP Home = 2GB
XP PRO   = 4GB Dual Channel(4x1GB chips)
Who needs 4GB ram anyway????

*smacks* in the head for anyone getting 4GB and 8GB chips they are better used as top end movie editing. Waste of money to use for BF2!!!!

Just to clarify, windows professional edition does NOT recognize 4 gigs of ram. How do I know? I've got 4 gigs. take a look:
https://img33.imageshack.us/img33/2131/4gigs7na.th.jpg
from my bios flash(sorry about the crappy quality), but this is what windows sees
https://img33.imageshack.us/img33/2715/3gigs1yp.th.jpg

that second picture is a bit grainy, but it does say 3.00 gb of ram.
I even remembered to turn my hax off.

And no i dont do any image editing or anything, but DAMN does battlefield 2 load fast.
