SourceForts is an excellent mod for Half Life 2: Deathmatch (not requiring HL2 or HL). It's installation file is only 13.5 MB, and so is great for anyone who wants a change of play.
In SourceForts, at the start of each round there is a short 'build' period (about 250 seconds). During this time, all characters only have a gravity gun with which to pull, push and coax tiles and boxes into position. By pressing "R" you freeze or unfreeze a block, or plank. Frozen Planks and blocks do not move, whereas unfrozen planks will fall according to the Physics Engine. As a result you can create massive ramps, staircases or walls. To prevent the opposing team from destroying your structures, there is a massive glass wall dividing the team areas. This disappears during the round. There are a limited number of building materials, so don't waste them!
During the combat part of the round, the players can choose from a variety of classes, with their weapons (Half Life 2: DM weapons). The blocks and planks are frozen permanently, until damaged or unfrozen by their own teams (and opposing teams, if damaged sufficiently). The aim of the game is to retrieve the enemy's flag and bring it to your own. After a while, a "repair" phase is begun in which combat ceases and teams can repair their structures.
SourceForts is a well-thought-out mod with no bugs I have encountered so far. It combines Half Life 2: DM gameplay with the ability to create your own battlefield, however you want it.
So far, except for the demo video issued by Valve, the mod has not had much exposure. It is an excellent mod and any owners of HL2: DM should head over and download the mod. The learning curve is rather gentle (the controls are great and easy to handle) and Deathmatch users will be making battlements and staircases in no time. Numerous magazines have reviewed the mod, each with positive comments.
For more information, go to http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/ (home page), or http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/index.php?p=site_about for the more informative page, to get you started.
Also, http://www.wiki.sourcefortsmod.com/index.php/Main_Page will cater for all your questions about gameplay and building!
(For Australian Users, there are two Internode servers running on VERY low ping, available via Steam Server search. Don't use XFire, it doesn't pick them up. Cheers.)
By the way, to anyone who decides to download the mod, post here and we'll add you to our Friends list if you want.
