HL2 is by far the most complete game I've ever played.

Having played and beat both multiple times, I like FEAR more. Yes the Gravity Gun is pretty original, but the atmosphere of FEAR drew me in a lot more than HL2. It could be the more realistic gun battles (Not in the sense of what was used, but how it was implemented). Yes HL2 is longer, but I was a lot more compelled to finish FEAR than HL2. I'm generally not scared by "Horror" movies and games, but playing FEAR at 2 in the morning in a dark room scared the shit out of me. It doesn't use cheap gimmicks like stuff popping out at you, but rather the atmosphere is just.....Freaky as hell. Oh and FEAR only has 1 cutscene your not directly involved in (The opening). And I must say HL1 slays HL2 (and FEAR).frankyman_88 wrote:
Whatever mate, you can't appreciate a real game. Sure the sound may be a tad better but the combat and weapons system is so dodgy and run of the mill, how can you even compare that to Half Life 2's wide variety of guns, especially the gravity gun. This opens up a whole new level of gameplay and makes the game that much more immersive, for example; can u pick up cans and throw them at the enemies head, or use pieces of metal for barricades in FEAR? I don't think so. "Oh, but FEAR has bullet time!" you might say; bullet time is one of the most overused techniques in games and movies and is nothing original at all, whereas half-life 2's gravity gun is a very original idea and is implemented extremely well into the gameplay. for example, you MUST utilize the gravity gun in the game to succeed, however in FEAR you can run and gun the whole way without ever having to tap the CTRL button. Half Life 2 never once uses a 3rd person cut scene to further the storyline, unlike FEAR which features several where the player is not present. This adds to the storyline of the game immensely makes it all the more compelling. Half-Life 2 graphics>FEAR Graphics because; 1. It supports HDR lighting. 2. The textures are higher resolution. 3.Characters are modelled more effectively and amazingly detailed, just look at Alyx's face(from HL2) compared to Paxton Fettels(from FEAR), there is significantly more realism. The Source engine is perhaps the most effective, resourceful and streamlined engine available today, which makes any game on it a cut above others of lower quality. I think this is about the last of the criticisms i have to make, however i will post if i find moreStingray24 wrote:
FEAR > HL2 in effects, sound, and gameplay. HL2 scaled pretty well, I'll give it that much, but compared to FEAR, there's too many gaps in the action.
What language was that? How old are you? Have you played HL2? You can't really compare it's single player to 2142 or BF2laughing_boy_2006 wrote:

Lol i think it was english...i think. Perhaps he has never left his mental asylum for long enough to learn proper english after being put there for literally shooting the "fucking hell" out of everything he sees. Just joking, but since you are new we would like you to understand that bf2s forums are a place for communicating sensibly and not posting useless shit.Major.League.Infidel wrote:

Good to see another fan of Half-Life 2. Now go buy HL2 Episode one and have even more fun. And don't forget about Half-Life 2 Episode Two.

Right there with you, MajorLeague. I played late at night with my headphones on and with EAX the sound surrounds you and the suspense startled me and made me jump a couple times. Especially when everything is quiet and I’m moving through the room with my weapon ready, suddenly the ninjas burst in from the roof at the same time the music comes in. Then just as soon as they drop in, they run away to cover and the suspense background keeps going. Most fun I’ve ever had in a singleplayer FPS, period.Major.League.Infidel wrote:

I've only ever done that a couple of times, I even turn the lights off and shut the door. Almost was sitting in shit by the end of the night game.Stingray24 wrote:

Thief series, my friend. As to the orchestral hits in F.E.A.R., they were decent, but the music was just not very memorable. But you're right about the irritation of music warning you of danger, as was present in VTM: Bloodlines (a Source title, though not available from Steam).Stingray24 wrote:
Gameplay:
If you didn’t like the weapons in FEAR, ok, that’s personal preference, but you cannot say there’s nothing original in FEAR. It was the first FPS I’ve played that contained a high level of suspense by using music in conjunction with surprise elements. Not a song kicking in to warn you of upcoming danger, but an orchestra hit like in the movies right when the action starts. The firefights are anything but run of the mill. No other FPS has firefights as fierce as FEAR - not Far Cry, not HL2, not R6: Lockdown, not COD2, not any other single player I’ve played. Only multiplayer matches of 2142 eclipse the amount of bullets flying around and chaos.
One cannot just run and gun all the way through FEAR, unless you dial down the difficulty level. I cranked up the difficulty to have more of a tactical challenge. For me, the action in HL2 was too scripted, much like HL1. (HL1 was the best FPS of its day) The action doesn’t start until you reach a certain trigger area and it plays out the same every time. That’s not the case in FEAR, because the AI reacts to my decisions, not scripting. When I attack from a different point in the room with a different weapon, the enemy responds differently and counterattacks in a new way. If I throw a nade, they take cover and shoot from there. If I rush them, the move to flank to get interlocking fire on me instead of just standing there waiting to be killed. The AI in HL2 is almost pathetic in comparison.

I find that in terms of finding your own way to finish an objective half-life and FEAR are both very similar; You have to turn this switch to open this door, eg. This is basically the only way to further any type of storyline in fps games.Stingray24 wrote:
Weapons:
For me, most FPS games come down the weapons and the enemies. If the guns aren’t fun to shoot and have good sound and the enemies are lame, then forget it. Gravity gun = yay, big deal, for my style of play. I don’t want to throw stuff, I want to fill the enemy full of lead using various deadly weapons. Being forced to do anything in gameplay annoys me. I like to pick my own way to take out the enemy and reach the next objective. If you liked the gravity gun, cool, glad you had fun with it and it was very original. I did enjoy throwing the saw blades at the zombies. big_smile Zing, no head.
Well i don't know about you but i have 5.1 surround sound and the combine AR on half-life sounds pretty damn satisfying to me . all the other weapons sound pretty crappy though, oh I almost forgot the magnum! That thing sounds pretty good tooStingrayHL2 wrote:
weapons were all unsatisfying for me to shoot because all the weapon sounds were simply too weak. The rocket launcher sounded really dumb, more like a grenade launcher. SMG and Combine gun had the same problem, too quiet. In contrast, FEAR takes full advantage of EAX sound in its environment and weapon sounds. The list of great FEAR weapons contains a quick firing SMG, the sweet shotgun (oh so fun blowing enemies in half at close range), assault rifle, pistols (dual pistols available), sniper rifle, railgun, and rocket launcher (who’s rockets actually roar out of the launcher). The reloading animations are also superb on FEAR and the EAX allows you to pick up the sound of the brass hitting rolling on the floor and ground. It’s even better with a good quality headset.
I play FEAR on full graphics on 1280x1024 and full sound until recently when my soundcard chucked a fit, but I'm getting a new one today hopefully w00t. The ability to light up a room in FEAR with weapons fire is impressive indeed, especially if you are wondering if that freaking little girl is sitting there waiting for you . When I play FEAR it feels like all the colors are based from the same pastel; all variants of grey, which makes the game more repetitve. The shadows also look a bit strange in some parts in my opinion.Stingray24 wrote:
Graphics:
I’ll give you HDR lighting, but it doesn’t make a significant difference in the game. In FEAR, when a fightfight erupts in a room, sparks fly off all metal surfaces, chunks fly out of the wall throwing drywall dust in the air and cardboard boxes get shredded and the fragments hang in the air. FEAR might not have HDR, but the light reflection look very nice as do the shadows. Did you play FEAR on max settings? If not, you missed some of the great detail.
Yes ok FEAR is a fairly original game, however the thing that gets me is the level design; its just corridor after corridor(given i havent finished it yet, so correct me if I'm wrong) with no driving at all. And I would say that the firefights in quake 4 are on par with those in FEAR, which i will give you are monstorously good.Stingray24 wrote:

The AI in FEAR is where the game really shines, however if you have ultra fast reflexes i guess you could do the whole thing without slo-mo. I know i couldn'tStingray24 wrote:

But what about the interactivity of the environment in Half-life 2? you can jump on things, pull things off the wall, use them, block hallways(or unblock them) wheras in FEAR the best you can interact with your environment is blowing out a few windows or putting chips in doors . And I really found the story more immersive in Half-life 2, but i guess everyone is different. Well i guess thats about it, thankyou for this conversation, +1.Stingray24 wrote:
Only the faces on the characters are better in HL2. What really matters is the combat modeling of a game and in HL2 the enemies just flop over . . . boring. In FEAR, I can injure their shooting arm, blow off their arms, legs or head, rip their body in half with a close range shotgun blast, etc etc. FEAR characters lose blood more realistically and HL2 has very little of that at all. Also, if I wound the enemy or shoot their weapon out of their hand, then they’ll try to drag themselves behind cover and shoot blindly with their sidearm out of desperation. That is just awesome and no enemy does that in HL2. I found FEAR much more immersive because of the atmosphere drew me in, the story is more intriguing, and the enemies are more intelligent.
The Dev team thinks late this year, due to some code-over issues.Towelly wrote:
