that or the contents of the Library of Congress.. either way

On a standard 3.5-inch drive, that's equivalent to 300 terabits of information, enough to hold the uncompressed contents of the Library of Congress.

It's not really a ton of data if you think of it.

I have a 5TB SAN at work currently and we are going to run out of space soon and thats just for databases.

"Nobody will ever need more than 640k RAM!" - Bill Gates, 1981

Now we have like what, 4, 16, 32 & 64GB of RAM? (The 16, 32 and 64GB of RAM are for servers...right now...)

I know this is a thread about HDDs but I'm putting that in there to reference to what people in past thought about the future of computers.

I'm still laughing that computers today come with a TerraByte HDD.  That is sick.

My friend told me a story of his older brother many years ago. He saw an ad in the paper for a 15 MB harddrive for $1499. He wanted to get it so bad because it was such a good deal! Then his dad said, "There is no way you are going to buy it. You'll never use all that space, 15 MB is way too much!"

And look at us now

and by the end of the year a single processor chip will have a billion transisters.  technology grows exponentially.  It's some law that i can't recall. In ten years, the idea of transmitting information with electrons will be archaic.

you do realize that 300TB in ten years will be about 300GB nowadays?

Computers with 4GB of RAM in ten years will be like computers now with 128MB.
