It's not like Obama or Biden caused the housing crash or Covid, this is purely on the new admin.
this meeting between trump/vance and zelensky is a car crash of world-historical badness. one of the worst diplomatic exchanges i have ever seen.
what the trump admin were hoping to achieve by cutting zelensky out of the earliest negotiations and presenting him with a shakedown for half his country’s mineral wealth, i don’t know.
it honestly seems like they’re talking to him and expecting him to beg and kiss their feet. a really revolting spectacle.
strange times. the cold war order flipped on its head. trump’s representative at the UN basically voting as a bloc with … north korea and belarus to help russia fuck over ukraine.
i know this whole ‘haha, let’s watch flyover america fuck itself over by voting for oligarchs to stomp on them’ is a masochistic lark, but really your country is basically turning its back on the entire post-ww2 world order. forget skeptical readings of an overweening NATO or undercontributing EU. there’s a place to register those complaints. but right now the trump admin are caving in to putin’s wildest dreams.
what happened to ‘the art of the deal’?

I don't know what else you want me to do. I knocked on doors, phone banked, donated my time and money. I got involved with advocacy groups. I can show you dozens of photos of me at political events working.
The people we were advocating for didn't show up. They didn't show up to the rallies and the meetings. They didn't show up to the voting booth.
The (fake) Catholic part of me tells me I need to suck it up and try again since "they know not what they do." But whatever.
...
There was a comment on the National Review that was the top comment IRT to Trump/Ukraine. It went like "50 years from now no one will remember or care about the economy of 2025. They will remember how we threw out allies under the bus though."

deserves a strong highlight, i think. correlation!=causation, yada yada, but this is a fairly common factor in a lot of my conversations with the trump side fresh from recent months, and "i don't have the time/patience" would lead into justification of the trump vote (see also: "i didn't vote for harris because i didn't agree with or understand harris." "did you listen to her speeches?" "no." "did you even listen to trump's speeches? how did you understand anything he was saying?" "i didn't listen to those, either").uziq wrote:

mention of "AP" or "Reuters" for political light-reading (you cannot suggest a book—it's a miracle if they even read a texted/linked article to comment on it) draws a sneer and audible scoff despite the fact that these aren't left-wing fox. there's a knee-jerk rejection of any and all things 'expert' without conservative endorsement, or a presenting of one or oneself as "alternative expertise."
like that forestry person you linked who got her face eaten by a leopard, their minds will never be changed except through the poetic, personal tragedy of reaping the consequences of their error. for now though, i think distractions like "gulf of america" will continue to generate chortles among those who enjoy the chaos.
all this didn't just generate out of nowhere. we've had decades of building oppositional defiance. i don't particularly enjoy the idea of red states suffering because of trump. but that the non trumpers of america and the world get to suffer because of it is more regrettable?
