OK me and my mates argue this quite often when we're pissed.

I am not racist or against imigrants

Anyway it really bugs me that when England play a sport mainly cricket against India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, in the UK, that half the crowd is cheering for the opposition, lots of kids in the opposition countries cricket top dancing and cheering for them.
What is wrong with that I here you say.
Most of these kids are British Citizens who were born in this country, live in this country and have a british passport, so why are you cheering for the opposition. I know that the country they are cheering for, is part of their heritage and that their parents will stick to their old countries traditions and roots. I have no problem with someone moving to the uk and continuing to support their country of origin, but if they have children born in the uk then surley the children should support England.
If I moved to New Zealand For example I would still support England with NZ as my 2nd team but I would expect my Kids (if born there) to cheer for NZ 1st then England 2nd.

I fully understand that we live in a democracy and everyone has the right to cheer for, support who they like.

But this really grinds my gears, I am very patriotic when it comes to sport.
Do you think I am over reacting any comments anyone

Just because I hate all football and think it is a boring and pointless game, and hate all the arsehole England fans puking all over my street after the game (there are 5 pubs, so it gets a bit messy)?  I suppose at least during the game there is barely any traffic on the road, and everything goes quiet for a few hours (unless you are in a pub, obviously).  To be honest, it was never the game that put me off football, just the people who watch it.

Love how you say I hate England and freedom.  Shows you are deliberately trying to get me to call you a 'fucking ignorant moron' or something, because you know it isn't true and is bound to get a response.  Unlucky, because I  couldn't care less what you think, and have decided to respect the forums enough not to even bother defending against your nonsense because of the risk of causing another flame war.

Think you missed the point of my post dude, at no point did I mention football or the behaviour of English/football fans

Good on you for not starting a flaming war cheers dude

I should have made clear that my original response was about football not cricket.  Cricket fans tend not to puke everywhere and chant annoying anthems at incredible volumes when they walk past your house at 2 AM.  I just find cricket really boring.  I don't wish any particular ill to the England team when it comes to cricket, it's just not my cup of tea (actually I prefer coffee anyway).  But on the subject a sport is just a sport, supporting a different country in a tournament doesn't automatically make you unpatriotic when it comes to the important matters.  Just my opinion anyway.

Quite frankly, I couldn't care less how England does in football or cricket, as neither sport interests me in the slightest. I don't really think it makes you unpatriotic if you support the other team.

And for lowings benifit, I also hate freedom, and all those other things that people selflessly provide my country, but I am to ignorant to appreciate.

I don't think you're necessarily racist, but you might be overreacting, yeah.

Here in Canada, if Canada are playing against any other team in any sport, Canadians who self-identify as having roots in the other country will overwhelmingly support the "homeland" over Canada.  Italian-Canadians support Italy, Norwegian-Canadians support Norway, and so on.  It doesn't bother me, or most people here AFAIK.

I know you weren't talking about football, but does it bother you that Owen Hargreaves gets a place in the England squad ahead of English-born players?  Should he be forced to play for Canada?

I don't mind loud and rowdy... far from it... what I don't like is people going crazy over shit music (shit by my standards, anyway), group  violence, and the fact that when violence is avoided then it is through excessive amounts of security and police.... that video looks tame compared to some of the raves I've been to.  And why would I give a fuck about being normal, if being normal means being an drunken arsehole in public?  Not to mention the fact is many of the England fans are racist bastards.  I'll not have anything to do with something that draws a crowd that ignorant, thank you.

Dude good point, personally I don't think he should, same as Lenox Lewis, Greg Rud(don't even want to attempt his name. You know tennis player), I think you should represent the country you were born in, not a country that your grandparents were born in. What a load of bullshit my gran was born in the USA so shall I go play football for USA cos I'm not good enough to play for england (well i'm not good enough for sunday league, but you get my point)

Still think a lot of you are missing the point, it's not about the sport (football, cricket any sport) it is about the fans and supporting your place of birth, nothing to do with fans behaviour, attitudes etc.

I think you're living in the past.  England fans' behaviour over the last two tournaments have been explorary and it's only the media and people harping on about the bad old days that spoil things.  There are Eastern European countries that are far worse than England fans but it is us that get rap because of decade-old incidents that we not allowed to forget.

Read this, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/a … ge_id=1770

I would add that no matter what type of music you're into, there are no more "bad incidents" with the followers of England than you'd get by the 'followers' of caertain bands/groups at a concert.  It's just human nature when you get a lot of people all in one place at the same time.....

However, he has a point. I don't see any rugby-related violence. NFL-related and baseball related violence has been flat at zero as far as I know. Cricket fans don't go ape when they lose. I've never head of tennis hooligans.

Rugby - http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=6 … 801218S163

As for NFL and baseball I would say a few things.  The "clubs" are run as businesses rather than a real representation of the town/city/state they are in.  They are run as franchises and the public watch it with the attitude that it's "sport's entertainment" rather than the life or death point of view many soccer fans have.  Have you ever seen the NFL reduce grown men to tears because their team lost?  I'm not saying that excuses violence but I am trying to make a point about the passion soccer inspires.  This is a post I found on another site written by an American after his first trip to see a soccer game....

"I took a trip to England to see what the hype is all about, and I must say: Go to a game at St. James' Park in Newcastle, England. I have been to one Super Bowl, countless playoff games at Yankee Stadium, and one Knicks playoff game at the Garden. Point blank: They don't come close to the intesity and passion at Newcastle. The fans are relentless, its ear-popping loud, and just an overall amazing experience."

As I said before, the odd incident here or there happens when you put 100,000 people plus all in one area at the same time.  I could post the countless news stories of shootings that have happened at Rap concerts over tha past year - Kanye West.

The England fans have been loved thus far by the Germans and there will be little tit-bits coming out of Germany because the odd fan got too drunk and got a bit vocal but it will the media reporting it and blowing it out of proportion because hooliganism sells papers.

Of course, this post wasn't about organised hooliganism, but those 'gangs' are being quickly stepped out and what they has nothing to do with soccer.  They use the game as a convinient way of organising a fight.....

Two points:

Being British, you should be appreciative of the British mentality.  If there are two teams that you appreciate equally (e.g. not at all), it's the British thing to support the underdog.  Obviously, England are the big dog, having ruled the empire, invented the game, etc. while Pakistan, New Zealand, etc. are the underdog.

Secondly, children learn from what they see.  If their parents cheer on a particular football team, they are likely to follow suit.  Same goes for cricket - they will identify with their parents heritage and probably support the same team their parents support.

doesn't matter much to me. I think everybody is free to support whichever team he/she wants, provided it is done in a peaceful and respectful manner.

But I also think family heritage has a lot to do with it. We have the same thing here with the children of turkish and italian imigrants who came to germany in the 60's and 70's. Although the kids all were born in germany and have german passports, most support the country their parents ( or in some case, their grand parents ) originally came from, even if they themselves have no particular affiliation with that country.

The thing for me is, do you identify yourself fully with the country you are now living in ? Most of the kids would probably say they don't consider themselves germans, even if they were born here, have a german passport and only visit their "native" country once or twice a year during the holidays.
