Yup, you need a degree for entry level jobs now.
It's ridiculous, I've got a meager certification, yet EVERYTHING here needs a degree. There's no place where I can apply to to go in at the lowest possible position and gain experience/work my way up
Do you guys have hiring agencies in Scotland?

It may be no consolation but companies which demand 'experience' are usually poorly run and populated by lazy managers.
Its also the current HR obsession, experience....

Even at my lofty level I have the 'wrong' experience for most of the jobs out there.

Its slowly changing http://www.theaustralian.com.au/careers … 6424790394 but with a candidate glut and Asia taking so many jobs its going to stay difficult.

Yeah
That's what I ended up applying to once I graduated. There must be about 50 of them that hire specifically for IT in my area. Wages are no hell for the entry level jobs. but I managed to land a one year contract. If anything, it's experience to add to my resume.

It just sucks because the whole hiring process nowadays is online-based for reach and convenience, but it's so impersonal that you're not even going to have a chance at "I've got a good feeling about this guy". I've been applying for quality control labs, microbiologist positions, any sort of scientific thing I'm vaguely qualified for, but for all my results, I might not have even tried. I've become desperate enough to apply at a local Ford plant because apparently the pay is good, though it has fuckall to do with my degree.

Camm I've lived in Switzerland and I could live my ENTIRE life there without a car. The public transportation is amazing and everything is close by. This is the United States of America, everything is freaking HUGE. You cannot survive here in a non-metropolis without one. The suburbs where everybody lives is really far from the urbanized areas where all the stores and jobs are, then on top of that the distance between said stores and jobs is huge too.

In Switzerland I walked, rode the bus, and train and I could go anywhere I needed from there in under 3 miles. Bigger than that and the amount of time justifies a car cause you waste a lot of time walking.

God people are so fucking stupid. Couple is divorced and self-described as "barely amicable". Yet they still want to share insurance policies and whatnot. So that means going through a bunch of bullshit to get one or the other to pay their part of the insurance (after going through hoops to get them satisfied as to who pays what), and finding out who to send the paperwork to and which addresses to use and needing forms back from both of them, while in the meantime they're yelling at each other over phone calls and e-mails. Fucking stupid.

And do people not know how to be concise these days? I shouldn't have to have a 15-minute phone conversation just for someone to tell me, "I need you to e-mail me this and this."

What does a proper cover letter look like and what stuff should I put innit? Never made one and now Accenture is asking one from me.
Accenture are a bunch of massive cunts.

Here's why.

I applied for an apprenticeship in Customer Service/Tech Support with BT (Telecomms company in UK). They accepted my application, invited me to an assessment center. I went in, kicked ass in the interview (Seriously fucking nailed it), passed both the English and Maths assessments, and felt great about it.

The day after (4th May), I got a call from the HR Manager, offering me the job. I said "yes! Thank you! That's great!" She said that they would go and draw up a contract for me to sign and will be in touch. So I went away and wrote up a letter to my boss to give her my 4 weeks notice, then handed it in that night when I went to work.

Fast forward two weeks (18th May), and I get a call from BT. It's the HR Manager. She tells me that I can't have the job that they've offered to me and I've accepted, because apparently my maths grade isn't good enough. I tell her the situation, I've handed in my notice, you already offered me the job which I accepted, I live in a flat etc etc.

She said she would go and speak to Accenture (who train the apprentices) and plead with them.

The Monday after that weekend I get a call from her saying "Yeah they won't budge. You won't be getting this job at all."

So now I'm left in a position where I should have started my new job today, but instead of that, I'm unemployed as of Friday at 10pm.
So I posted this two months ago. Today, I recieved a phone call from my lawyer, he had just gotten off the phone with the HR Manager that told me two and a half months ago that I wasn't able to get the job. She had called to say that they were going to offer me the job. I'll either start on the 15th August, or sometime in October. Fingers crossed for August.

And the best part? My lawyer isn't even charging me for it. Better go get a bottle of whisky for him!

I am half congratulations and half concerned. Hopefully, everything works out great. I would be concerned they would look at me as a trouble maker from the start though, and already be looking for ways to get rid of me. Hopefully you got a good contract?

I am slightly worried about that yea, but of you think about it, As long as I never put a foot wrong, what would they fire me for? If they fabricate something I would go straight back to my lawyer

Yeah, that is why I was asking about your contract. Most people here are "at-will employees" meaning they don't need a reason to legally fire you. They just decide they don't like you, and as long as it isn't one of the illegal reasons (sex, race, religion, yadda yadda yadda) there isn't really anything you can do. Occasionally wrongful termination suits happen, but they are rare and usually have to have a lot of evidence to get anywhere (even rarer). Mainly those are cases that prove you let person A get away with the things you listed as your reasons for firing person B, showing discrimination.

They wont need to fabricate anything.  All the gotta do is give you all the shit work/hours/teams/people and eventually you tire of it and move on.  This is on the basis they are have a axe to grind with you so you might as well keep a journal with all the crap you potentially have to put up with then go down the path of constructive dismissal etc etc.  Just dont try to piss off the people you work with in your team.

I hate my new fat greaseball boss. After I voluntarily go out of my way to do something that is not my job I not only don't get a thank you but I don't get a 'you are welcome' once I thank him. Twice I said thank you and twice I was just looked at like I have two heads.

I really hate this man not just as a boss but as a human being. I hate him and his obese daughter that sometimes comes by to do filling when she is not busy eating and being smelly. I hate the way this uneducated fat ass wobbles around with his undeserved arrogant 'I am smarter than you' attitude. I hate his 'you are too dumb to realize that the raise I gave you is pointless since I cut back the time you receive per job' demeanor.

I hope he has a heart attack and dies in front of his entire family. I hope his daughter gets depressed and goes from 250 to 400 pounds and loses some toes to diabetes.
