Teacher I used to work with before she changed districts messaged me out of the blue. They are hiring a new special education teacher at the school for severely disabled children she is at right now. The new job would require me to work with kids who are in wheelchairs and stuff like that.

The difference in pay would be at least 30%. I had a Fry moment when I was told the number.

The catch is that the school's future is a little bit up in the air since the university that contracts the school is thinking about getting out of it. Contract would be good for 3 more years but then who knows. That plus the fact that I am too invested and connected with my current district made me turn it down. I am on the leadership track where I am and just need to be patient. Still a 30% raise would be something. Nice to know I have options too.

if you work in the public sector, with public sector job benefits (like a government pension scheme or a big union), don’t try and ‘leverage’ your private sector earning potential over them, lol. you can always make more in the private sector. that’s kind of the point.

the difference is a public sector worker, or state school teacher, as it may be, can reasonably expect a job for the next 15-20 years if they put their head down. a private sector worker can take a lot more earnings but it exposes to, you know, the same market forces that can shutter a business (or school) in the space of a year or two.

just a piece of general advice. don’t tell your public or nonprofit sector boss that you could earn more in the private or for-profit sector. they will laugh you out of the office.

in mach’s case especially i could not imagine working with the severely disabled for any serious amount of time. that 30% higher earnings comes with a heavy emotional tax.

The university that runs the school of disabled children that I spoke about last week is collapsing.

Their $400 million expansion left them with $185 million in debt that they don't know how to pay. The university said they have 25 days of funding available. They are doing layoffs a day or two days after announcing they are in the middle of a financial crisis. They are asking the state for $10 million dollars in emergency aid. Their structural budget deficit is $60 million.

Total surprise. The president of the university who resigned at the same time she announced the crisis seems to have ran the place into the ground. She went from $100 million surplus to a $60 million deficit in a decade. The new buildings and satellite campus they built was financed by debt and didn't make the return they expected before the American university system collapsed. Enrollment is down and the university worked hard to keep tuition low over the prevailing decade. Bad bad bad.

The American university system is collapsing by the way. Enrollment is down year after year. Very different than what happened when the Great Recession took place. College enrollment actually spiked in '08. If a medium sized college just outside of NYC can collapse because of enrollment decline....there must be many more that are going to crash soon.

According to a just released report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center (NSCRC), total postsecondary enrollment, including both undergraduate and graduate students, decreased by 4.1% - equal to about 685,000 students - in spring 2022 compared to spring 2021. Added to the 3.5% drop that was seen in spring 2021, the overall two-year decline in college enrollment has reached 7.4%, or nearly 1.3 million students since spring 2020. The deepening slide dashed hopes that the worst of the pandemic-era erosion of enrollment was over and, instead, raised concerns that other factors - such as growing skepticism over the value of college - may be keeping students away."

Expanding access to higher education through a federal loan scheme seems to have had a lot of bad effects and I wonder if we need to rethink all of it. Too many universities were reliant on student loan debt and then spent the money liberally. They expanded in expectation that there would always be more students willing to take on the debt. For the students, we saddled a lot of people with massive debt. Bad bad bad

There was a narrative that college degrees were becoming meaningless due to everyone getting college degrees. Now the narrative is that higher education in America will collapse because not enough people are enrolling to meet artificial quotas borne from a capitalistic approach to higher education.

From what I've seen a lot of degrees this days are sadly shit, many people have been ripped off badly and people looking at it are concluding its a bad deal.

One more interesting thing about this university's trouble is that they announced their plans to end their contract with the school for disabled kids months ago before they backtracked. One of the reasons they cited was that the 90 year old building the disabled kids were in wasn't in good condition. Meanwhile the school runs up almost a quarter billion in debt building new dorms, satellite campus, and a business school that didn't pay off. The new dorms cost $1,800 a month. For that price you might as well either rent a luxury apartment in a fancy building or go to Rutgers.
