One of my coworkers doesn't celebrate Christmas. I just found this out after I asked if she donated to the boss's and his secretary's Christmas gift fund. Had to let her know that the lady who collects money for it keeps track of who donates.

speaking of funding, a stat i read recently that has jumped out is that the total cost to vaccinate the global south and get them up to speed would be around $24 billion. that's a lot of money. but it's the same amount that america spent per year in iraq+afghanistan on air conditioning.

I have an actual work conundrum that I would like advice on.
I do a lot of stuff with my union. Events and such. I was asked to be one of the union reps for my building. Should I do this?
I eventually want to move into admin. I feel like becoming a union rep puts a target on my back. I would rather spend time working on continuing education and department projects than taking on the problems of other people. I also feel like you have to make a choice at some point on which "focus tree path" you want. I would also need a way to politely decline the invitation to become a rep from the union boss.
What should I do?

I spoke to my mentor who said "No. Not until you are tenured". The only reason I am involved with the union is so if I need to call upon them for something I am not a stranger. And also the president and I are in the same department and building so I see him everyday. Otherwise...I am not particularly attached to it. Like the union solidarity days where we are encouraged to wear our union shirts to work? No thanks. I just dress my usual self.
Gut feeling - No, it'll be a career blocker and soak up a hell of a lot of your time.
