I’m on page 250 or so. It’s the American opus. Really.
Yeah onedrive is great but they haven't adopted this yet. Don't know why. Most anything is down to security concerns of boomers running the IT procurement.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

My computer has crashed 3 times in the last two days doing presos on bluejeans. Oops sorry, dropped the call, give me 5 mins to reboot and join the conference again.
O365 online (onedrive) allows collaborative input. They even have version controls if you want to use them. Obviously some access control/confidentiality tradeoffs though
i can't even imagine the contrast of going from ayn rand to john steinbeck. shit, tortured sophomore scribbling to master story-teller.

I’ve only read East of Eden of those. The others on my reading list. But damn was East of Eden good.

Right. Damn. Almost forgot about libraries. The nomadic life got me a lil twisted. I usually pick up books at goodwills or curbside.
I started getting into Stephen Jenkinson. Anyone else come across his work?
East of Eden is Steinbeck's best, in my opinion. Grapes of Wrath is such a solid book though. Steinbeck really has a way of conveying the distressing, urgency of the situation, and how dire it really was moving west.Jay wrote:

be prepared to read a lot about Tom Joad on his hammys.
I have a close friend who reminds me so much of the Chinese guy from East of Eden, what was that character’s name? I’m getting goose bumps thinking about that darn book.
And to listen to some Rage

I still call my car 'the jalopy' because of Steinbeck. Really the highest and best use of my education, me thinks.

That book was okay. Overrated I feel. If it wasn't for the name, it wouldn't be on the best seller list right now.
While you cucks were comparing your tiny lit-peenors I actually bought some books today.
Nice paper, crisp text, no illustrations except maps at the front and back.
The readers companion seems like a waste, flicking through it seems to mostly dredge up links to The Silmarillion, which I didn't care for and I'm not sure what doing so would really achieve.
I'll give it a go I guess.

what did you actually expect? almost nothing put together by christopher tolkien has really added a great amount. it's fan service. 'unfinished tales' was similar (and much bigger, iirc).
the silmarillion and the hobbit have probably been given the same box-set treatment by the same publisher.

I feel like an ideal setup for a LotR collector would be two matching box sets: one with Christopher's compilations, and one with his father's books. Indexed to a coffee table book of various art and illustrations.
I expected a bit more than "sentence 23 on page 392 of The Two Towers bears some similarities to paragraph 14 on page 594 of The Silmarillion", maybe some background, where the ideas came might have come from etc
Thats what it looks like skipping over pages here and there.

there are lots of very good books on tolkien, a veritable cottage industry, in fact, many of them written by those pesky academics you hate. lots of quite tedious middle english, old english, and norse sagas scholarship, too.
but yeah, christopher tolkien didn't really add much to the legacy.

I haven't read Reader Companion, but from its description as well as those two pages it doesn't look like it's just what you described. ^Dilbert_X wrote:

And if it's just containing itself to book lore, there are probably more on-topic books you can rifle through that talk about where Tolkien dredged up his ideas. Every few years or so I'll fork some Tolkien-related book over to my dad who gets a kick out of that sort of thing.
Not sure this fits in with the Book Club crowd but I've just finished reading this

I have a lot of respect for this guy and the Disney company. Also seems like he will be running for president at some point. Hope it works out.
