I want to apologize to trans people. The proper treatment for gender dysphoria may in fact be a transition to their preferred gender. If medical professionals support their decision then the state should even fund it as it should any other healthcare options.

I still believe that within the trans community there exist a subset with genuine gender dysphoria and another subset with some other mental illness. I fear that the latter groups could be convinced by members of both groups to invest in more harmful transgender practices when in reality they would benefit from traditional/formal mental healthcare. I think we are still moving too fast on the whole thing and slowing things down to a degree would be better than going full steam ahead. At the very least people who object to part or the whole idea should be given space to have their voices heard instead of being canceled and banished to the fringes. Only as long as those voices present their views in a thoughtful and respectful manner of course.

It SHOULD be benign indifference - that should be the default position. But some people try to enact laws to punish or restrict the freedoms of people that are different for whatever reason. In that case, the proper position is to advocate for those people who are treated unjustly.

I think it was Jay's favorite historian Howard Zinn who said "you can't be neutral on a moving train".

i mean, sure, toilets need some thinking through. but in the grand scheme of things these are not issues that raise me to rancour.

i can’t say it would ever bother me if someone asked to be addressed as whatever. what is it to me? a single syllable, for the sake of maintaining civility with someone? it costs literally nothing. if some total oddball asked me to please refer to him as sir lancelot, i’d do it for as long as necessary for whatever purposes we were interacting. who fucking cares? life is too short.

there have been instances of people with borderline crazy problems 'abusing' the open bathrooms policy. i can see why the alarmists get fretful and why the conservative 'culture wars' people get their flashpoints from. there have been legal cases.

my university had giant communal bathrooms. the halls were practically victorian. we bathed together like fucking romans. boys and girls even shared toilets in the student union. the watering hole at night. it got messy. lots of bodily juices were exchanged in that den.
