It's an incredibly useful skill that I really want to pick up myself. Substitute welding with shop class if you want. Shop classes have largely disappeared.

I blame insurance companies more than leftists though. They're the ones that made society, and thus parents, paranoid so they could limit their exposure. Everyone is afraid of getting sued if little Johnny gets a bruise now.

It more has to do with society focusing on preparing students for college and white collar work than fear of insurance companies (?) and lawsuits. My generation was told from a young age that if we didn't do well in school we would end up in careers cutting grass. So art classes replaced carpentry because it looks better on college applications.

FWIW, my high school had a carpentry class as well as classes in art and accounting. Though they removed the car repair class and replaced it with a pottery class. I took the pottery class. I can make jars. One of my co-workers who moved into white collar work lived in NYC and went to school there. They still had car repair classes.

They removed shop class from my hometown school as well as all playgrounds because insurance premiums spiked. It's been happening a lot all over. Everything is about safety now. Don't go outside at night, don't play sports, make sure you eat your vegetables. It's like society suddenly decided collectively to become Jewish mothers.

My grandparents would kick me out and say go play outside, so we did. We built tree houses in the woods, had bike races with all the neighborhood kids, walked ourselves to school, went fishing and swimming at the beach, played tackle football and baseball in the street. It was a fun childhood full of minor scrapes that if I allowed my son to have, I would go to jail for child abuse.

Edit: and I still have a scar on my neck from playing with fireworks. I lived to tell about it!

And yeah, I know that comes off as old man nostalgia, but the world changed dramatically for the worse right after my childhood. Crime went down and everyone became bitches.

The school probably used insurance as an excuse to get rid of an expensive class the same way your boss is using insurance cost to tinker with your benefits.

You have a shitty perception of yourself and others. Kids still go outside and have fun and cause trouble like they did in the 90's. They probably have more fun and do it more efficiently now with smart phones.

Liability from having a kid chop off his finger on a bandsaw?

And no, if kids go outside they don't leave the yard. In the 80s and early 90's you would see multiple groups of kids running around neighborhoods without parental supervision. I never see kids today unless they're holding their moms hand at the store.

I see kids hanging around my street all the time without their parents. My parents complain about  unsupervised kids using their driveway as a bike ramp. I drive by my K-8 school every day and see kids hanging out in the yard unsupervised like I did 15 years ago. The school never raised the fence to keep the kids out. I saw a police officer talk to a bunch of 12ish skateboarders the other day while another officer tried riding their board. When I went biking to the park, I saw a few kids come up from the secluded part by the water where we used to make bonfires and drink. The city never patched the metal fence to get to the playground and I am sure kids still sneak into the park and night and experiment with girls. They built a skate park where older teens hangout with younger kids and introduce them into the skater lifestyle.

Basically kids do still grow up and act like kids where I live and I am sure elsewhere.

But then again, I live in a small city surrounded on all sides by big cities and not tucked away in some upper middle class real housewives of long island suburbs. Which come to think of it, is a factory for sorority sisters who drink too much and get them selves fondled at a frat or guys who call the police because they think they are going to die in their dorm from a marijuana overdose.

That is a terrible way to bring up a child, I agree.

A cultural studies instructor at Washington State University has warned her students that they could face disciplinary action -- and in some cases, failure of her class -- if they use certain terms she deems unacceptable, including "illegal aliens," "tranny" and the words "males" and "females" to refer to men and women.
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/ar … story.html
I mean, that seems to be written to stir up the anti-PC police, but then a few paragraphs down: It [the university] said that "no student will have points docked merely as a result of using terms that may be deemed offensive to some."

The only word I'd take issue with, especially in a college class, is "tranny". I doubt we're talking about transmissions, but I've only ever heard it as a slur against trans folk. That said, punishment never seems to be a very good way to get others on board with those behaviors, and I'm also not terrible supportive of telling people what words they can use to begin with. After all, this is real life; it ain't tumblr.

This has become a fairly common story. The University of New Hampshire was in the news a few months ago for largely the same reason. Visit a message board with people educated in marxo-feminist sociology and they seem to spend 90% of their time trying to re-educate each other about the proper way to speak to each other. Calling someone normal or straight is considered offensive. If you were born male and identify as male, you are cisgendered male. They've imagined this whole vast universe of language and protocols so that no one could ever possibly feel slighted or offended, except when people unaware of the protocols interact with them and they can launch into their practiced diatribes. Things as small as asking people where they're from is considered a microaggression because it supposedly puts the asker in a superior position by making the askee an outsider by default. I'm just scratching the surface here, you should see some of the absurdities these people come up with and the mental gymnastics they perform to make everything fit together. The saddest part is that they spend so much time denigrating cis white males that you can tell that in their heart of hearts, it's really what they wish they were.

Did you spend time or know anyone at the university of New Hampshire? Or are you going by what you read in the news?

Where the hell do you spend time with marxo-feminist? Even in the left wing groups I read and contribute to, there is never any debate about proper terms to call people. No one harps on about cis gender or male or whatever. Most of the time the Marxist and democratic socialist yell at each other while both yell at the American leftist for getting distracted by race and cultural issues rather than destroying existing capitalist structures.

Good stuff. Highly recommend.

Well that's just unacceptable, if there are two things we can't tolerate in the modern age its boys being boys or members of the military being lightly injured.

Cadets at the prestigious United States Military Academy were left with split lips, broken bones and dislocated shoulders after a pillow fight that left some first-year students concussed and knocked unconscious.
yeah fucking harmless aye, just some dislocated shoulders, broken bones and concussions.

But this year, the fight turned bloody as some students swung pillowcases packed with hard objects, thought to be helmets
