Make sure you're not just passively sitting there answering questions.

Ask some yourself. How often is the pay cycle? What sort of holiday leave is available to you?

When if any probation period lasts?

How are salary reviews carried out / when?

Ask those sort of questions and act pleased with their response. They don't want to offer you the job and have you then turn it down.
Those are the absolute worst questions to ask, right next to questions regarding vacation time.

Maybe if that's the only job you have applied for.

They should be selling themselves to you as well - if not find somewhere better.

Outside Aus there are many more candidates than jobs - you have to sell yourself to them, not ask questions which demonstrate you're in it for minimum effort and maximum short term gain.

Even if they want you asking trivial admin questions would irritate most interviewers, if answers to questions like that would make or break the deal then you'd give the impression of being a trivial person.

The "can you tell me where the nearest bus stop is and what time the buses are" types just aren't of interest to most companies.

No, they hold all the cards. You should have done your research before going in to know enough about the company, and you should have a fair idea what your skillset is worth before you even enter the interview process. They know what the average pay is, and you should too. You talk about pay and benefits only after they give you an offer. Then you negotiate. If the offer is laughable, oh well, you wasted your time and you badmouth them to the rest of your industry.

You are always, always, always selling yourself during the interview process. Present yourself as stable, knowlegeable, and as a hard worker who isn't just going to be there for a paycheck.

Its not a bad suggestion.

Aussie's "ask them how much vacation you get" is horrible advice as virtually everyone posting after him noted.

I always make it clear to the interviewer I intend on moving up within the organization and ask if its possible.

I'm not saying you create a website badmouthing the company, but people in every industry talk to each other. "Have you heard of Company X?" 'Yeah, they're cheap as hell, you don't want to work for them.' or 'You don't want to work for them, the boss is an asshole and morale is bad' etc.

Remember when everyone was angry that Yahoo was forcing employees to come to the office? Isn't opting to work from home on a longterm basis kind of a sign you don't want to advance in the company? Just wondering

Nah, not really. In a company with multiple offices most conferences are done over the phone or video anyway. Some people get more work done when they're home than in the office.

Multiple offices is so so inefficient unless you're talking computer programming. We have offices in irvine, denver and atlanta. Our mfg is in asia. For me personally it means calls as early as 6am and as late as 9pm. Its ridiculous. Not to mention the lack of interdepartment interaction. Every location has their own little departmental island, which really impedes workplace social interaction and cross-department brainstorming. If I've got a question for our engineering team I have to pick up the phone, or if its too late, send an email. Sometimes a day delay in response for something I'd otherwise be able to walk across the building and have an answer to in 5 mins.

My company has an independent office in DC but I don't interact with them at all.

My wife, on the other hand, works for a British multinational that has offices in London, New York, Seattle, San Francisco and on Long Island. She has people that work for her in three different locations, and bosses in four. Everything she does is done via email, or tele/video conference except for the very occasional times when everyone flies out from wherever they are to meet up at the Long Island office, or she flies out to SF. It works for her, and seems to work for her company. She does two days in the Manhattan office, two days in the Long Island office, and then usually works from home on Fridays.

Face time is overrated.

when i worked my apple gig i regularly had to go in at a moment's notice at like 1-2am. the tech guys and server admins had to be in every friday at 6am to upload the data packet back to california. board-meetings and important things sometimes wouldn't come through until 6pm. it was a nightmare. frankly i have no idea why the multiple offices thing happened - not when everything with even a tiny bit of seniority had to be referred back to the west coast, anyway.

Works for me.   Create a ticket in the afternoon.   DBA in India works on it overnight.   Ready for me in the morning.

I have a feeling if you experienced working with people all over the country (and all over the world) you'd be saying different. I'm not sure why you'd mention offices within an hour or two commute when I'm talking about different time zones/countries but whatever.

@ilocano- yeah, send a ticket in. Now coordinate project/NPI and tell me how easy it is. Its so efficient our company racks up literally hundreds of thousands of dollars a month in travel/phone charges. And yes, we use webex and skype and teleconferences every day.
