well for macs the OS improvements are marginal at best, for windows it's sometimes sort of important, 7 was a lot better than that PoS that was vista.

It's not pretty bad. If you're on the desktop with one of the many many apps for a start button (both free and paid), then for all intents and purposes it's Windows 7. I don't need to, I got a key from work. Someone bought a new Windows 8 Laptop, hated Windows 8, wanted me to put Windows 7 back on for him. I asked him if I could use his key. He said yes. Free key for me.
