Food for thought:

10,800,000 guns were sold in the U.S. in 2011.
11,493 people were killed by guns in the U.S. in 2011.
3.7 deaths by firearms per 100,000 people in the U.S. in 2011.
U.S.A. ranks 1st in private gun sales in the world and ranked 4th in the world for homicides by firearms.  South Africa is 1st followed by Columbia and Thailand.

There were 311,800,000 in mid-2011 so 0.0036% of our population was killed by violent crime involving a firearm.

By comparison, in South Africa which ranks first, 31,918 people were killed by firearms, and with a population of 50,500,000 that comes out to 0.063 or 125 per 100,000.  Guns are legal to own in South Africa but waiting periods can exceed 2 years.  Most guns in South Africa are owned illegally.

The following website has many charts and graphs clearly showing the number of gun sales increasing over the past 10 years and the number of gun related homicides DECREASING over the past 10 years.  As gun laws were relaxed during Bush when the ARB expired this trend developed.  There is direct and scientific proof that a well armed society that has registered gun owners properly background checked reduces crime.  I believe this is the major argument most anti-gun advocates clearly and consistently miss.  South Africa has a gun law that is TO restrictive, therefore leading to most people acquiring guns illegally and thus more criminals acquire guns than law abiding citizens leading to increased gun crime.  Whereas in the U.S., gun laws are strict enough to filter out most bad/crazy people but laxed enough to allow responsible gun owners to arm and protect themselves.

One may argue that the U.K. with it's extremely restrictive gun laws benefits from near nill gun violence.  That's fine, I just say look at the facts.  In 2009, 4 people were killed throughout the U.K. by intentional gun homicides.  That's 4 people that acquired a gun illegally and used it.  However, 722 people were murdered in the U.K. in 2009.  If someone wants to kill someone, they're going to do it, guns are just the easy idiot proof way of doing it.

Ruger firearms however should be banned worldwide.

Why the fixation on guns? Why is it such an issue to you that we have access to them? Because you've been brainwashed to think you are morally superior for restricting them? Pleaae. Guns are such a non issue in this country that the only time I ever really think about them is when this thread gets bumped.

Court strikes down Illinois concealed carry law
By DON BABWIN, Associated Press
Updated 10:58 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) — In a big victory for gun rights advocates, a federal appeals court on Tuesday struck down a ban on carrying concealed weapons in Illinois — the only state where it had remained entirely illegal.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said state lawmakers have 180 days to write a new law that legalizes concealed carry.

Gun rights advocates long have argued that the prohibition against concealed weapons violates the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment and what they see as Americans' right to carry guns for self-defense. The court majority on Monday agreed, reversing lower court rulings against a lawsuit that had challenged the state law.

"The Supreme Court has decided that the amendment confers a right to bear arms for self-defense, which is as important outside the home as inside," Judge Richard Posner wrote in the court's majority opinion. "The theoretical and empirical evidence (which overall is inconclusive) is consistent with concluding that a right to carry firearms in public may promote self-defense."

He continued: "Illinois had to provide us with more than merely a rational basis for believing that its uniquely sweeping ban is justified by an increase in public safety. It has failed to meet this burden."

The court ordered its ruling stayed "to allow the Illinois legislature to craft a new gun law that will impose reasonable limitations, consistent with the public safety and the Second Amendment as interpreted in this opinion, on the carrying of guns in public," Posner said.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office, which is responsible for defending the state's laws, said it was reviewing the ruling and would comment later Tuesday.

Also studying the opinion were aides to Gov. Pat Quinn, favors strict gun control laws and proposed an assault weapons ban earlier this year that lawmakers defeated. Quinn has vowed to again bring legislation that would prohibit the sale or possession of semi-automatic rifles and other guns.

The leader of the Illinois State Rifle Association, Richard Pearson, praised the federal court's decision and said the state could have a new concealed carry law by early next month. A bill has already been written by Rep. Brandon Phelps of Harrisburg that includes provisions for background checks, field provisions and other issues, Pearson said.

"We are extremely pleased with the ruling," Pearson said. "Now that the court has ruled ... we will work as soon as possible with legislators to craft a concealed carry bill for the state of Illinois."

He said lawmakers could consider it and pass it during a weeklong legislative session in January if they wanted to.

"Christmas came early for law-abiding gun owners," said Phelps, whose proposed legislation came within three votes of passing in 2011.

"I said on the floor, 'A lot of people who voted against this, one of these days, you're going to wish you did, because of all the limitations and the safety precautions we put in this bill, because one of these days, the court's going to rule and you're not going to like the ruling.' Today's the day."

"The court's pretty much said there's no restrictions," Phelps said.

The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed by former corrections officer Michael Moore of Champaign, farmer Charles Hooks of Percy in southeastern Illinois and the Bellevue, Wash.-based Second Amendment Foundation.

It's a simple matter of freedom my dear Watson.  I am free to own a gun.  My neighbor is free to own a gun.  My neighbor is free to break into my house and I am free to liberate him of life with my legally owned firearm.

The "world leaders" have no freedom to own a gun.  If you own a gun (something that is pretty standard here) you will have it confiscated and probably go to jail.  Meanwhile the criminal breaking into your house cares not about the law and has his gun.  You defend yourself with a small knife.  He liberates you of your life and your belongings.

Also, when I get bored I can legally blow shit up with bullets and tannerite.  Europeans get bored and go watch Les Miserables and eat fish eggs.

Its more the American fascination with guns, and the readiness to use them - as Michael Moore pointed out.

Pretty well anyone in the rest of the world can get hold of a gun, legally, if they really want to.
Living in a country awash with guns, where someone with severe mental problems can buy as many assault rifles and magazines as they want may be 'Liberty' for him, but hardly for everyone else, is a strange notion to the entire rest of the world.

All these guns in the hands of gahd-feerun mercuns does't seem to reduce the crime rate, but does increase the number of kids who accidentally blow their heads off and means the criminal supply is utterly saturated, so what is the point of anyone and everyone having an arsenal exactly?

King George isn't coming back any time soon, and so far you've shot your least tyrannical Presidents so that argument hardly flies either.

Mines not

As am I if the threat is real.

Can't think of any country were guns are illegal... pls enlighten me.

If you own a gun (something that is pretty standard here) you will have it confiscated and probably go to jail.
Not if you have the proper licence and paperwork

Meanwhile the criminal breaking into your house cares not about the law and has his gun.
No they don't, the jump in penalty from break and enter to armed robbery is far to high to chance getting caught with firearms for petty crime. Thus only serious or organised criminals bother with them and they don't target random people in their homes.

You defend yourself with a small knife.  He liberates you of your life and your belongings.
If you say so... from the country with a murder rate 5 times higher then here...

Assault rifles have been heavily restricted in the US since before they were invented.

For trollberts first point, I'm going to have to agree.  Americans have a fascination with guns, and more of a willingness to use them - as evidenced by the constant talk about guns and the proclivity to use them, even in cases of home defense.  Perhaps Americans also have a proclivity for breaking and entering too, but I think it's evident there's some type of fascination with guns that is far greater in the US than most places, especially most "first world" countries.

All he did was highlight simple statistics, and compare the attitudes to gun ownership of various countries - which in the US is paranoid and childish.

Yawn, battle rifles, civilian versions of military rifles, whatever you like.

I like firearms and shooting, there are many positive aspects, there's no shortage of firearms here and yet gun crime is pretty low and we don't have a third-world murder rate.
