As I'm sure you're aware, I've set up a home server for storing media, streaming etc. It's a P4 Prescott with HT, 1 GB ram, and a crappy old board and case.

It's noisy. It's hot. The fans are RIDICULOUSLY loud. And above all, it's probably sucking the juice form the wall like a crack whore needing her next fix.

What do you guys suggest for a low budget, low power, low noise, home media server?

I'm looking at things like Semprons, with DDR3 (because it's stupidly cheap), but I'm open to suggestions!

Atom or those AMD APUs
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I've already got hard drives and such, and a PSU, I'm assuming those NAS's take SATA HDDs, of which I have none spare.

Yeah L2 cache is something I'm bothered about when I'm setting up a media server to stream media between my computers and iDevices.

Shit that's what I'll do. I'll buy sandy bridge, 16GB of ram, and two 680s for my server.

Seriously eusgen, don't be a twat.

Check out the Zotac ZBOX

Pardon the Newegg link. I'm not sure where you usually do your PC shopping in the UK.

I have a similar box.  Anything beyond a single DVR capture, plus one video stream, and it chokes.

Hmm I'm looking for something that I can throw more than 1 or 2 hard drives in. That seems a little on the small side.
