bloody fucking jesus did all stock heatsinks on P4s sound like a jet engine?

Anyway, I've configured a server out of an old pc (p4 HT, few IDE hdds, 1gb xms 800mhz), and I'm uploading media on to it from my pc, but it's only going at about 10-12MB/second.

It's connected to my router, and so is my pc, so the data is going:

my pc -> router -> server

is that what's slowing it? or would I be better getting a PCI network card?

Bear in mind I'm only uploading my existing media, after this I'll download straight to the box itself.

I'm transferring at ~40MB/sec from my external to my pc btw, so why so slow to the server?

Server mobo probably doesn't have gigabit ethernet. 10-12MB is about right for 10/100 connection.

Heatsinks don't sound like anything unless there's a fan on them.

Thank ye kindly oh buggles, should I invest in a Gigabit NIC then?

Do you have a gigabit router/switch? Most aren't.

If not - put up with it.

Also - why mention the speeds you're transferring from your external at when you don't tell us anything about it?
Is it a USB 1 external? In which case those speeds are amazing.
Is it an external SSD RAID array connected over PCI-E? In which case those speeds are really shit.
Seriously, if you're going to give information like that you need to put in some details - otherwise it's a completely redundant comparison for anyone looking at it. What is it? USB? NAS (100Mb/1Gb/5Gb/10Gb)? Firewire 400/800/other one? PCI-E? eSATA? Thunderbolt?

Ext hdd is a SATA 2 over USB 2.

I'll check the specs of my router, it a boggo netgear that came with my vigrin package, so I'm not holding my breath.
