Seems kind of dumb that they're using power poles instead of underground like FiOS does it but hopefully it's just unique to this particular area.

BT is looking at running their new lines overground too, people get quite annoyed with the roads being constantly dug up

All of this is at the long term cost of reliability and maintenance for them, underground lines are the future: no ugly and possibly dangerous(if powered) lines hanging above and no risk of damage from trees/car accidents/anything that can move or fall above ground, better to just do the job the best way possible for something as big of an improvement already as this because if it really takes off, it'll probably be sustaining its part of the country for a long while with all that bandwidth, and Kansas is also one of those states that are prone to tornadoes.  I guess since this is just the initial run for 1Gbps, then this is a more than fair tradeoff but only if Google themselves plan on running it as an ISP.  I'll have to look more into this "Google Fiber" thing...

I wonder that myself, they were probably the quickest ones to accept Google's offer

It's easier than a lot of other places? Who knows...labor's cheap here, and there is a lot of demand, esp. on the KS side where it was originally supposed to be confined to. No one thinks of KC as having anything nice, but the burbs on the KS side are full of well-off professionals - it's one of the 'most educated' places in the country...(it also exemplifies the depressing, uneventful suburbs everyone tends to envision).

I'm just glad they're here, and will screw up Time Warner's monopoly. I'm interested to see what consumer level pricing will be.

So you guys didn't even have FiOS there to compete with the cable companies?  That must also be a key factor for Google if they're doing this as an ISP, no fiber optic competition either.  Then again, this is probably only for internet and maybe VOIP if Google's running it

Tampa is one of four test markets with Verizon. We've got up to 150 down here now and it's more than plenty. When I'm downloading at full speed from giganews its not my connection that cant keep up, it's my machine decoding that bottlenecks it.

I'm pretty sure we had a post on this when google first announced that they were going to start taking bids from various cities. It's was a while ago.

Nope.

And Time Warner's prices are pretty ridiculous. They actually downgraded their plans' pricing structure, so what used to get you 30mbps now gets you 10 (I paid for the 10mbps package, and it still goes 30+, so whatever). Seems like pretty much the opposite of what I would do if a new competitor was coming to town...

They also like to overcharge you unless you call to bitch, and then somehow the issue is magically apparent to them and they fix it.

In short, fuck em.

Verizon's pretty much the same here with the overcharging, even competing with Comcast.  I'm sure it must positively affect prices somewhat between them but they both still slip in hidden fees for everything, Verizon is really bad at doing this, my mom has been on the phone with them periodically for years trying to clean up the bill every so often whenever we change something or a promotional offer expires

The annoying part of dealing with ISP's is sitting on the phone for about an hour trying to finagle out the "best" deal. I wish it'd all simply be one of the up-front packages, but I guess they think they can make no money that way.

I guess it's their way of making the same profit even when they give you some promotional offer or lower price over the other competitor, they just NEED to have every last dollar from you even though they have infinite amounts of money already.  Another sickeningly powerful industry in America optimizing everything for profit-milking and having just about acceptable speeds versus the rest of the world, meanwhile all that money either goes into strictly personal use or just sits in bank accounts completely undistributed into the economy and the infrastructure.  I hope Google can balance it out but it doesn't sound like they're going to give it to more than a few communities:

I don't think a lot of people realize how badly the government fucks all of us on taxes. I have a plan that is supposed to cost $109 per month (internet + tv + HBO) and instead it costs me $189 or so after taxes. Look at your itemized bill sometime if you feel the desire to be angry.

That's about $71 which would be probably impossible to have over here without some kind of really good promotional offer.  I haven't had a home phone in at least six years now, I think that's probably the trend as more and more of my generation are growing up connected to the world by cellphones and not really seeing a need for a home phone

I'm sure they're pretty bad here too given how much my governor fucking LOVES taxes, he wants to raise gas taxes another 15 cents, sales taxes again to make it 7%, up from 6% which is also his fault from his last term, and make us pay tax for all online items and enact that all at the same time and everybody is leaving the state en mass, businesses included.

But you also live NYC which is the capital of taxes, I heard Newports are $13 a pack up there, lol
