I have a Seagate external drive my parents bought years ago that I can't even get to appear on any computers I try. When I turn it on and connect it through a USB port the error message "device not recognized" appears, and I can't do anything beyond this.

I had it working for 10 minutes (I could access the drive and view it's contents), but could not transfer files to it. It was giving some data corruption message when I did. I unplugged it and now it isn't even being recognized.

Drive is a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB External HD which connects only though a usb cable.

I would pull the hdd out of it and try putting it in another computer to figure out if the hdd is bad or the enclosure is bad.
