Yeah, I kinda have to agree. But in those places it's to expedite gameplay. In a house, it's for decoration.

Anybody ever test it before and after buying the fire pit for the Whiterun house to see if the chimney(if you could call that cut on top of the house a chimney) was smoking before you buy it?

so i'm just riding my horsey when i see a big bonfire in the distance. i decide to check it out and it belongs to a couple giants and their mammoths. i spy a large chest so i autosave the game and head over to see what's in it. a blood dragon descends from the sky and my horse, lydia, and i proceed to wage war on it. unfortunately the giants and mammoths get mad at us for some reason so i use my sanguine rose and summon a dremora. meanwhile i am trying to find a nice perch where the mean giants and mammoths can't hit me. so i'm fighting 3 different things when all of a sudden, a sabre cat and mudcrab (i am nowhere near water) appear out of nowhere and decide to duke it out in the middle of this shitstorm. so lydia and i proceed to kill everything and i figure my horse is dead by now but he lived, the invincible bastard.

Considering all you mentioned it sounds like you should be high enough level where giants are no threat to you

they're manageable after like l25 easy enough. i still wouldn't want to aggro 2, an elder dragon, the mammoths and a sabre cat at the same time though. lol mudcrab

yeah, giants are no problem where i'm at (level 32)... it was at an earlier level I didn't even bother since I knew from everything I'd heard that I'd be destroyed. it was like when i was trying to beat krosis at level 4

I 1-shot sabre cats and 2-shot giants + fire dragons do almost no damage to me so i would have been like /kare

I complete the Imperial side of the "Jagged Crown" quest. Not as rewarding as I thought. I got more shit from complete the quest with the mage college.
