It'll be something once a game is developed that's open world and doesn't rely on missions to continue things along.

So what makes Doom maps so special?

Nothing but you mentioned Just Cause 2 so open world free roamers popped into my mind.

Doom was still an A-to-B setup. Run this way, grab that key. Run the other way, open the door. Run up there. grab the next key, run over there, open that door. Flip the switch, end the map, start the next one. The game runs on an unstated missions.

Games like GTA, JC2 and Oblivion have missions that you can do if you want to. Otherwise, just wander around as much as you please. If you want bigger free-roaming games, stick to flight simulators.

In terms of first person shooters Doom was more open than most modern first person shooters. When compared to something like GTA, JC2 and Oblivion it's not as open. Derp.

You mentioned Just Cause 2 in response to
There's very few games games nowadays that have a true open world setting
Which made me think about open world free roamers like GTA. In consequence I posted what I thought about modern free roamers.

I never mentioned anything about Doom. Doom has nothing to do with my point that "free roamers" nowadays aren't truly free yet.

I'm just saying it'll be impressive once a free roamer is created that doesn't rely on missions to continue things but instead has the entire world react to your existence in it regardless of missions.

That would be too expensive and difficult to pull off. Not only that but if you have too little structure, the game becomes very bland and repetitive (see Far Cry #2).

Well not if there are a lot of different things to do within it but that does create the problem of

Halo 3 ODST allows you to roam around the city all you want and random enemies will pop up, you can of 'course get back to mission playing as well. Or are you gonna say console shooters are lame?

That isn't what I'm describing. In that example missions are still driving the story.

Already been done to some extent in games like Freelancer.

The very pic you posted has a bloody Doom map on it, plain as day. So yes, you did mention Doom.

Pfft. You posted that pic before I even dived in. When I said JC2 was a pretty open world, you dismissed it (er, it and GTA-type games) as a game still having missions. What's the problem with missions? Ignore them if you don't want to do them.

Then you dismissed MMO's. What the heck do you want?

Far Cry 2's problem was, that "open world" only related to the savannah, a few zebras and lots of mercenaries.
It was pretty good at that actually, but it completely cut out everything else that you would expect from the real world: civilian people, markets, shops, etc.

The meant to portray an African country in a civil war state, but feels more like the empty demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, with everyone shooting you on sight.

your image was a doom-map overlay, non? seems like doom is the classic high-example of the previous game-generation's design principles.

i think the thing that doom's map design had that new attempts at 'open maps' don't have is a sense of puzzle and intrigue... even building suspense, and adding to the game's atmosphere. that's the key part: the map design is conducive to the game's overall atmosphere. whenever a developer does an open-world aspect nowadays, it just seems misplaced and a little bit pointless-- a waste of time, like cookie-cutter sidequests in an RPG, or like the ubiquitous vehicle-driving mission in an action-movie FPS. take warman's halo 3 example: what does having free-roam around the city achieve? in doom you were stuck in a puzzling level, intentionally designed to be at times frustrating and labyrinthine-- it added to the game's story and point. map design and game design really needs to be unified with the game's concept/idea. that's how to make a good game. pointlessly throwing in a sandbox or open-world element in the hope it'll blindly please players is shooting in the dark.

It doesn't necessarily need free roaming, but it should allow the player to have a certain amount of freedom to explore, and maybe get bonuses for finding alternative solutions to a problem (eg Deus Ex or Half Life), maybe reward them with extra items or backstory and not just tie them to a linear pathway where all the player can do is mindlessly press 1-2 buttons the entire time

Deus Ex's level design was fantastic for it's time. I hope the new one goes back to it's roots in that aspect.
