Mike Fahey — Should we consider hardcore PC gamers the hipsters of gaming just because they tend to bring up how PC gaming did everything first whenever an innovative new console title comes out? Maybe commenter Truthtellah has a point in today's Speak Up on Kotaku.

Kotaku just trolls for hits, gaming journalism is as a whole quite retarded but Kotaku is particularly bad.

RPS is by far the best PC news site

what a joke of a journalist. could he try possibly any harder to aim for the 'topical' audience pleaser, or what. who isn't hitting on hipsters right now in the 'cool' media? it's almost hip to be anti-hip... sad that the conflicting attitude is now affecting even gaming journalism (i can't think of a possibly less hip social clique than fucking video-game gamers).

I only read Kotaku for news, mostly because I like the Gawker-style of layout they use. In terms of editorials, they suck.

i think they definitely have one of the worst reputations. all interest i had in gaming journalism (which admittedly wasn't a lot) was instantly obliterated when forwarding it to any experienced journalists for advice. i think in the pecking order they're the morons that technically have very little journalism expertise, but carry their articles and their 'wisdom' with oodles of geek-enthusiasm and hobbyist interest. i think there have been very few accomplished gaming journalists. the new online-blog generation just worsens the ratio of good-to-shitty journalism yet more. i've read some truly painful writing in magazines like pc gamer. the fact that nowadays the entire gaming journalism industry is pretty much enslaved to the master-index of Metacritic says it all...

Watching and reading gaming journalism kills me inside. The excitement they exude for games seems naive until you realize those opinions have been bought.

I saw an E3 preview this morning which explained how original a bunch of sequels were going to be, and how Bioshock was a pioneer in gameplay mechanics. I nearly killed myself.

I find community reviews on youtube to be far more informative than 'pro' ones.

the fact that the gaming journalism industry is so bankrupt is endemic... you even find clearly bought-reviews in supposedly top-end and 'respectable' cultural newspapers, such as The Guardian over here. they reviewed Brink, against every other specialist gaming magazine, pretty highly (if i remember rightly). there's no consistency and it's often decided by the whim and taste of the individual reviewer (and it's not as if they're qualified in a 'gaming' sense, other than just having a childlike enthusiasm for games, which is pretty general). it's like handing over the music review for classical music to a person that has only ever heard canon in d minor by pachebel, or something. gaming journalists seldom have any worthy credentials and often just write to compliment the reigning metacritic average-- they're often discouraged or castigated for writing against that 'standard' (journalists should know, for a start, that a mean-average is a fucking terrible way to calculate the quality of anything).

the fact that there's now debates and exposés on the 'politics of metacritic reviews' shows just how beyond help the gaming journalism industry is... a supposedly critical and intellectual endeavour is now entirely sublated to an arbitrary percentage-index. so much for intelligent engagement.

Do people actually listen to any of the things said by critics? I certainly don't look for reviews to determine if I will play a game or not. If my interest is piqued by some trailer or screenshot I happen upon or a story I look forward to, a bad review from some gaming web site isn't going to deter me. Likewise, I'm not going to go out of my way to play any game just because it got astounding reviews.

that's, again, a criticism of how shit the gaming journalism industry is... critical opinion in other areas (e.g. literature, music, film) actually carries some weight and influence (and always has, historically). it makes you wonder why gaming reviews are so easily discarded... and here's a hint, it's not the perennial "because everything is subjective!" get-out clause...

After years of reading PC Gamer, IGN, Gamespot and such, I've learned to sift out the obvious bullshit, so I'll take corrupt gaming journalism over the nonexistent gaming journalism of the early 80's. I just prefer user reviews that are generally conducted in an admittedly biased fashion, but aren't beholden to corporate whim.

This, to a certain extent. As far as paying attention to critics is concerned, I mainly look for their negative points to see if they coincide with any of my own complaints. Sometimes that may be a determining factor in whether or not I'll buy a game.

The fact that the current generation of people ~40+ don't see video games as anything more than childrens playthings probably doesn't help the credibility either. People like Roger Ebert are pretty well respected and all he does is give a few thumbs up at a movie. If I were a video game critic, I don't think it would be something I'd be terribly proud of. I'd probably be ashamed if someone asked me what I did and I said "I review video games" because it still has that stigma of being some trivial form of entertainment.

Really? I don't get that vibe around here. There's Gamestops all over the place and most people I talk to, if the subject comes up, still play and enjoy video games well into their adulthood. I think it's just universal acceptance among professional critics that video games lack.

for the most part i am of the opinion that the shittiness of gaming journalism can only mirror the inherent crisis of quality in the games themselves.

Buy junk, they make more junk and the media will report on even more junk, hyping people up to buy the next junk. It's a vicious circle.

and, as i've said, there's very little incentive to make a good game or to review it to a high-standard when everything, ultimately, boils down to total sales made and the rigged metacritic score (which has become the holy index for all criticism, it seems, on the internet).

Like anyone who attends E3 cares about the announcements.  Only a means to increase hits on your website.  E3 is all about the mindless fun of trying out the new games, and other eye-candy I enjoyed in my younger days.

Rage is Bethesda? News to me. I suppose if it frees id so they can focus on the engine instead of creating another slime-coated monstrosity like Doom 3, more power to them.

e: nvm, they're just publishing, I guess

Read in The Sun at work. What a fucking retard.

I can't stand the majority of reviews, but game reviews are the worst. I think gamers have extremely varied opinions for any one review to matter to a majority.
