The Dems did that in Texas a few years ago. They set up their own legislature in exile in Oklahoma Texas Rangers brought them back.

You know why they are boycotting yeah?

The Repubs want to remove all bargaining power of state employees (with execeptions to police, firefighters, etc).

All that they can petition for is a salary increase and only increase given has to match inflation. You wouldn't accept that if you were looking for work. You'll see public services cut and employees quit.

And yet it's the Democrats who are labelled job killers for wanting to better healthcare services?

Right?  I'd also fire the 1000 teachers that called in sick that day.

Good on them.  The whole "We don't like it when we can't win, so we won't 'play' with you" is weak shit.  Unions have long been bending over States.  Fuck em.

Ya, I do.
Bargain schmargin.  It's ludicrous deals that helped put the State in that prediciment in the first place.  Look at other large union areas and tell me they're succeeding.

People are lucky to have a job.  People line up to be public servants.  We fuckers are no better than the rest.

D's are job killers.

I understand why there is a problem.  Fleeing the state while high-fiving protesters is a bit dramatic, don't you think?

Besides, why is paying for at least 12.6% of your healthcare a bad thing?

"Unions still could represent workers, but could not seek pay increases above those pegged to the Consumer Price Index unless approved by a public referendum. Unions also could not force employees to pay dues and would have to hold annual votes to stay organized."
They still can get a larger raise, if supported by the public at large.  They also can't force people to pay union dues, which is pretty sweet.  My sister is stuck into one of those unions...it does nothing for her, but she has to pay them dues?  And that job is part-time...

Would it be better if the state decided to layoff thousands of employees?  Or just reduce benefits while keeping them employed?  If they're really pissed, they can fix it after next election.

The basic problem is they want private sector pay scales and public sector benefits, unions let them achieve both.

Anyone heard of a pragmatic union?

It especially includes teachers unions. Tell me how this makes sense... teachers here have cost of living increases built into their contracts. If the cost of living is rising will this not be reflected in tax receipts? Why is it that the teachers union comes hat in hand to every local school district asking for property tax rate increases to pay for those built in cost of living adjustments? So every year they get a larger and larger chunk of the pie and their job doesn't change. They perform the same task for 40 years, year in and year out, and yet they constantly receive higher pay for it. Please name any other job in the world where the same is true.

Now, aside from all that, teachers like to point a loaded gun at parents. They'll sit in class and make comments about parents being greedy so little Johnny goes home and tells his daddy to vote in favor of the tax increase. Or they threaten sports, or the arts, or any number of other things.

Sorry, but teachers are way down on my list of people that require my sympathy. Overpaid babysitters the lot of them.

You would expect different from people who choose that career path because A) it won't get in the way of them having a family, B) it gives them summers off and breaks throughout the year, C) job for life via tenure and D) there is no drug testing so they can continue to fry their brains on a nightly basis? I know quite a few teachers and there are maybe 3 that I would want within ten feet of my kids brain.

I do believe tenure should be eliminated from public primary and secondary schools.  Let schools determine appropriate metrics for performance based pay.

I'm mostly autodidactic. I had a handful of good teachers in grade school but most were turds who couldn't explain how to draw a box without a lesson plan in front of them.

The adage "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach" is fairly accurate but it would be better expressed as "Those who can, do. Those who are afraid to try, teach".

Like I said, I know quite a few teachers. Most chose the profession so they could have summers off. Because of this, and because they expected an easy ride through life, it attracts the 'woe is me' types in great numbers. Never will you hear more whining and crying and bitching and moaning than inside a teachers lounge. It doesn't matter if the teachers in that lounge are making six figures annually or six dollars, they will whine and cry and bitch and moan that they are underpaid and overworked. That is a universal truth. So, sorry if I turn a deaf ear to the plight of teachers. In my experience they do more to hinder the learning process than aid it.

Edit - Now, I received a fantastic education in high school from the private school I attended. The teachers there made about 1/3 of what the public school teachers in the area made and were non-union and without tenure. For the most part, they enjoyed going to work because they had motivated students. What this taught me was just how rotten the public school systems are, and it's not because of the students, it's the teachers themselves that have made it rotten.

Shrug. I experienced it many times as a kid. Teachers would use their students as weapons against their parents whenever a budget meeting came up. If the budget was voted down they would immediately cancel all after school programs which would make the kids howl even louder.

Hearing the call that lesson plans make for shit teachers though. Worst teacher was the one who followed a strict pre-planned lesson structure and allowed no deviation from it. At all.

Never happened to me, lol...I think a lot of your experiences can hardly be condsidered a rule...I had a completely different experience throughout school.  I had many teachers who challenged and engaged me, but I also had parents who did the same.  My public school education was pretty damn good.

I think that cutting the public sector salaries to reduce debt is a bit of a stop gap measure, and is only likely to lead to a lower quality public sector.

If it drives away workers, how does that help the state? How does the public sector gain anything from this?

By all means cut spending projects, but hitting salaries of the middle/working class public servants is going to help anyone.
