Seriously from what I saw it was pretty obvious he was trying to decelerate and not injure the Man Utd player. You could tell from the way he fell he was slowing down and had pulled up from the challenge, and given the importance of the match a regular free kick would have sufficed.

He'd had a few tackles before that too, the referees in particular in European leagues/European games have tried to stamp out tackles from behind, automatic freekick etc.
