why on earth would anyone want 12Gb of RAM with an i7?

are you encoding HD video 24/7 whilst gaming or something?

Well really your options are 6GB or 12GB. Unfortunately if you want more than 6, there isn't a whole lot of middle ground.

So if you want a true epenis, then you have to go 12

good point. im not thinking in triple-channel yet. dual-channel DDR3 seems to be more than enough

IIRC Aussie uses some hardcore programs for his uni stuff or something.. 12GB is probably in his benefit.

5970 was a bit silly though... two 5870s or 460s would have been a much better choice.

5970 isn't really that bad of a choice if you want top end performance. It is extremely close to 2x5870 in most games (sometimes slightly faster), its quieter, uses less power and in Australia at least, costs around $200 less than 2x5870.

HD 5970 is extremely bad choice because it is getting replaced in a month. So is HD 5870, it is getting replaced in 3 weeks.

And no, its not quieter than HD 5870 CF, nor is it faster (wHat do you expect when the GPUs are at >20% lower clocks than on HD 5870)

I wasn't arguing against waiting for new cards, I was simply saying that vs 2x5870 (as finray said) its not really much worse.

I also didn't say it was faster, in every benchmark ive seen it comes within about 2-10 fps of 2x5870 and beat them in some non-graphics intensive games and on one game was behind about 25 fps. Also, it does use less power, does cost less and according to the benchmark i'm looking at it is marginally quieter as well (about the same really).

I'm just basing this off price and benchmarks, i've never actually used either.

"in some non-graphics intensive games"

Exactly, those run great with one HD 5870. Usually HD 5970 trails or equals to HD 5850 CF which again can be had for less than HD 5970.

HD 5970 is basically 2x underclocked HD 5870. So obviously it is going to need less power as it is running on much lower clocks (slower).

E: Multi-GPU cards and setups are in general terrible when it comes to price/performance. They also have more flaws than I could write in 10 page article too.

What do you think about my /!\CUSTOM MODDED/!\ 8800GT?

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I see what you did there, one way to get away with using adapters.

e: I guess it would be about time to retire my G92 when you are slapping yours to antique HPs.

Eh, it's not so antique. It's got a 65nm 4400+ in it.

Ha, we did the exact same things with the Noctua fans. In any case I regret not having push-pull on the cooler, so I'm going to order some more fans (one for the case as well).

I have 2x 1450 rpm Scythe Gentle Typhoons but was too lazy to put both on the cooler as this is mearly temporary setup till I get RMA going.

A year, this is nothing new to me. I had to RMA brand new Corsair PSU once too which had same fan issue. The fan still runs but makes annoying clicking/grinding sound.

Still comes as a shock. A year is a short time for something to fail in a top-branded PSU. Hope my Corsair doesn't fuck up.

My Zalman lasted me 5 years before I replaced it. Still will use it one day.

Tighten all screws, make sure HDDs are not touching metal-to-metal anywhere clean fans & make sure no wires are touching a fan...

There is nothing the manufacturer can do except hope the fan doesn't get too hard bump during shipping and later on fail during use.

Idd.

I think most DOA and pre-warranty hardware problems are more related to shipping than the manurfacturer...

How is the GTX260 treating you?

Can you double check that the clocks are 650/1400/1000 . I may have reflashed the card to the nvidia recommended non-OC clocks. If I did that, reflash to the original gigabyte clocks. You can manually rededit them with NiBiTor or just grab a copy of the BIOS off gigabyte's site. Or just set the clocks through software with EVGA precision / Riva Tuner / ...
